Stargate Opening on MMO Worlds

goauldfemaleconceptartpreview.jpgNot every licensed science fiction property makes for a good game. Despite a long history of failed game tie-in projects the world hopping adventures of the Stargate Universe are soon arriving for gamers late next year. Recently MMO news site Ten Ton Hammer secured an interview with the senior marketing manager for the upcoming game, Kevin Ballentine to talk about the Stargate Worlds product, its relationship with the long running TV series and what players can expect from their Stargate MMO experience.

Pleased to know that the Stargate Worlds team wasn’t taking the MMOG market shake-up to seriously, we turned our questions more towards the game and the future of that world. While it’s been stated in previous interviews that there could be some tie-ins between the game and whatever Stargate TV series is running, we wanted to run the question by Balentine again to see what the current situation was concerning TV/Game tie-ins.

“As a matter of fact, this is one of the things that’s really going to propel us into the future,” Balentine stated. “In the terms of licensed Hollywood intellectual property, your blockbuster film is good for your single player video game. Your television series is the equivalent of an MMOG. That’s the dynamic that we see. There’s a great degree of incentive and a great degree of work for us in having a tie-in with this television series on a regular basis. We want to push people towards the series and have the series push people towards the game.”

Stargate is a series I’ve personally enjoyed for a very long time and still enjoy on DVD but I’m not completely sold on its late entry into the very crowded MMO market. While I’d enjoy blasting Jaffa with a Zat or piloting an F-302 through a gate to fight the armies of Anubis I just hope they can ignore the Ori BS from the last few years of the show. Been there, done that, if I want to play out a badly retold version of the Crusades I’ll give Sega some more money for the Total War series.

Leave the Ori alone…they were gold. And Vala was the best ever.

Apart from that silly comment, good news.

The Ori were decent, Vala was awesome to the extreme, Cam not so much. Honestly as long as they can get Richard Dean Anderson and Don Davis to do voice overs i’ll be as happy as a pedophile at a Toys R’ US.
