Some gamers are a little concerned about the new Stargate Worlds MMO. I don’t blame them. It seems that a lot of games based on movies and television shows are more about the license than actually being a good game. Games like Battlestar Galactica come to mind.
Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment is fully aware of the stigma that goes along with games of this nature:
However, the developer’s more than aware of how a license “also comes with the stigma of rushed and poorly executed games based on blockbusters and children’s movies”.
Having a license “does jumpstart the community aspect of your game because the dedicated fans of the license are likely to be your biggest advocates”, admitted studio head Dan Elggren.
But, he added, the key to success is simple: “Build good, fun games that people want to play. We know what the key is. Now it’s all about execution.”
Although I certainly have reasons to be concerned about the title, I’ll keep my mind clear and wait to see how it turns out. Stargate is a wonderful universe with plenty of opportunities for great stories and great gameplay. As a huge Stargate follower, I can only hope that Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has created a game worthy of the title. I haven’t actually played the game, but it’s on my list of things to do.
