SECURING A THIRD

Go ahead and send your first Phoenixes to begin hunting Overlords as soon as they’re out. You want to deny as much scouting as possible—the less your opponent knows, the better. Once you’ve got four Phoenixes, start going after Queens and Drones. You can kill Queens in one lift at this point; just make sure not to lose any Phoenixes in the process.

Your Phoenix harass is going to give you a lot of scouting information. Keep tabs on the size of the Zerg’s army—if they’re not committing hard to aggression, go ahead and take your third base as NaNiwa did. Follow the build’s next checkpoints on your way to constant Void Ray production.

With a Photon Cannon, Photon Overcharge, Void Rays and Phoenixes, your third base is safe against pretty much everything except mass Speedling. If they happen to open that, go ahead and take your third base just a bit later—maybe waiting until after your additional Gateways have warped in or your Void Ray count is high enough to secure the third. Though it may feel awkward at first, you should never have more than three Sentries at a time. Save that gas for Archons!

After you add on the production facilities that follow, you will be sitting pretty. With 10 Gateways, +2 Ground Weapons, and Charge-Zealot/Archon/Void Ray, you’re going to have a seriously powerful mid-game.

Great article, really helpful!

Only thing I can think of is that the build order would be very hard to follow ingame- perhaps put it in a notepad doc in the downloads or something?

Thanks!
