State on StarCraft: Red Bull Training Grounds
State on StarCraft is a weekly column on Game Front by Ryan “State” Visbeck, a pro StarCraft 2 player. Each week State brings you his unique perspective on all things StarCraft, including tips, tricks and stories from the front line of competitive play.
NOTE: “State” is officially sponsored by Game Front.
This weekend is Red Bull Training Grounds, a three-day StarCraft 2 tournament that features eight players from WCS North America and WCS Europe. It’ll take place starting Friday at Full Sail University’s campus in Orlando, Florida.
I’m really excited to be attending this tournament. Since I moved to the Quantic House last year, Red Bull has become an important part of my practice and tournament regimen. Training Grounds will be the first time I’ve been in a focused practice environment since I trained with StarTale in Korea.
Red Bull has done three StarCraft 2 events previous to this in the past year and a half. Each event has had varying focus between training and tournament competition. The first Red Bull LAN largely focused on preparing players for the MLG Winter Championship, while the second, Red Bull Battlegrounds, was a dedicated StarCraft 2 tournament. With Training Grounds, Red Bull has moved to being a more a balanced “weekend of intense scrimmage and expert analysis.”
At this Training Grounds, the other players and I will get a chance to practice against each other in a more informal training environment. We then move on a to a GSL-style group stage on Friday. Between each game, players will offer their own unique insight on builds and strategies for those watching at home. The top two from each group will then compete in the playoffs starting Saturday.
Red Bull is also planning to do additional events in the future. The WCS North America Season 2 Finals will be take place Aug. 10-11 at the Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica.
I did a pre-tournament interview with Red Bull earlier this week, so be sure to check it out! This week’s replay pack is a special sneak peek for my games in Orlando.
Follow @redbullESPORTS and myself on Twitter for more updates on Training Grounds as we play through the weekend and make sure to tune in on Twitch! Training Grounds will be a lot of fun, and I’m really looking forward to sharing the experience with you guys.
