Steam and Mac Getting Together on Wednesday

steam on mac

Steam for Mac is launching tomorrow, and it’s bringing Portal and the action-RPG Torchlight. And it comes with a perk.

Steam on Mac includes Steam Play, which allows those who purchase a game on Steam to play it on both Macs and PCs. OK, so maybe that’s more of a feature we assumed would be there than a perk worthy of a name, since we’ve been able to download and install Steam games wherever our accounts are since 2004. But Valve is pushing this Steam Play thing as a big deal; it is mentioned in their press release before any launch titles are named.

The release mentions Torchlight and Portal as being “among the initial titles available on Wednesday,” so there will be others coming this week as well. Other games will be ported over every Wednesday.

Perhaps just as big news is that Valve’s Steamwork tools are revved up on Mac, and the Source engine is ready to roll as well. The Mac may not have been considered much of a gaming platform before, but now all that can hold it back is developer and/or user apathy.
