The popular Steam service is getting a upgrade in the form of a whole new set of community features in preparation for the launch of the Team Fortress 2 beta next week. The new community will offer several tools for social networking and multiplayer gaming, all free of charge. Users can now create a Steam ID, which will include an avatar, favorite lists, and other personal information. Players can also build up a friends list, which will alert you to who’s online and available to chat or play a game. The Friends List is also accessible through either the Steam client or while playing a game. The Team Fortress 2 beta will be available on September 17th, for all those who pre-order The Orange Box through Steam.

Just to be clear, Steam Community, as it’s called, has left its beta form and been released to the public. A lot folks have already been using it.
