Stupid Rumor of the Day: Sega Considering a Dreamcast 2
In what I can only refer to as “stupid” (although “idiotic,” “moronic,” and some other less polite terms work), rumors have begun swirling that Sega is considering reentering the hardware biz. Why, you ask? Because Sega applied for a trademark of the name “Dreamcast” back in August.
Well, that alone hasn’t fueled the speculation – rather, the specifics of the application are what are pushing these rumors right along. It makes a mention of the following:
home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs
What’s notable in that are the “floor pads or mats” and, to a lesser extent, “flash memory cards.” Fond Dreamcast owners like myself won’t remember any mats or floor pads for the Dreamcast because, well, there weren’t any.
So, surely, this must mean Sega is planning a new console which will feature floor pads and mats? Aside from it seeming like a horrible move, we can’t outright deny this rumor. So for now, file this one as “open, but highly unlikely.”
That being said, as much as I don’t want to pay for another console, the Dreamcast is one of my favorite all-time consoles.
