Stupid Rumor of the Day: Sega Considering a Dreamcast 2

dreamcast.JPG

In what I can only refer to as “stupid” (although “idiotic,” “moronic,” and some other less polite terms work), rumors have begun swirling that Sega is considering reentering the hardware biz. Why, you ask? Because Sega applied for a trademark of the name “Dreamcast” back in August.

Well, that alone hasn’t fueled the speculation – rather, the specifics of the application are what are pushing these rumors right along. It makes a mention of the following:

home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs

What’s notable in that are the “floor pads or mats” and, to a lesser extent, “flash memory cards.” Fond Dreamcast owners like myself won’t remember any mats or floor pads for the Dreamcast because, well, there weren’t any.

So, surely, this must mean Sega is planning a new console which will feature floor pads and mats? Aside from it seeming like a horrible move, we can’t outright deny this rumor. So for now, file this one as “open, but highly unlikely.”

That being said, as much as I don’t want to pay for another console, the Dreamcast is one of my favorite all-time consoles.

well it is a possibility i mean if things like Wii and Xbox 360 can pass and call themselves successful then im Sure Sega Dreamcast will really be in it, as LONG AS THEY RELEASE IT ON TIME  !! 2013

this wont rival Playstation but it could the other 2.. meh its still JUST a rumor..

I expect they cover lots of areas that the Dreamcast never used (mats, flash memory) for the simple reason they don’t want anybody using the name Dreamcast on any type of video gaming device.

I find the Dreamcast a depressing subject. I loved Sega. I had the Master System then the Megadrive but then they went and released a console with the most retarded controller I have ever seen (except for maybe the Atari Jaguar).

There was a version of Dance Dance Revolution (2nd Remix, I believe) for the Dreamcast. That would certainly have a floor pad controller.

Erm i take it your referring to the dreamcast bro………..

The controller for its time was ok if you ask me. I do indeed think this is a stupid rumor. The only reason i think its stupid is because 80% of me wants it to be true, but then i actually come back to reality and think so ok they guna release a new console?……..I doubt itl be called dreamcast 2 or ‘dreamcast oh the other one we canceled’

If sega were to start with hardware again then the best thing they could do is………………..A dreamcast handheld. Dreamcast games in your hand exactly the same as when you remember them from 1999 sounds alrite to me. Crazy taxi, powerstone and soul calibur anyone?

For me waking up christmas day when i was ten and getting to play sonic and streets of rage instead of what i originally asked for ‘double dragon on a nes’ was the best christmas i ever had. Long live sega and everyone who ever created a game or a machine for the company. Fuk electronic arts. ………..Maybe if they supported the dreamcast we all would have seen dreamcast 2 a lot sooner and not just a rumor.

I still dont understand how they ‘EA’ ever had the cheek not to support sega when it was the genesis/megadrive that made EA who they are today. If sega did not allow EA to publish games on the genesis/megadrive would they even have been around when dreamcast was released.

Im guessing most of us one day will see a new sega console on the market. I personally think microsoft is the only answer to a sega like console now tho

When sonys blood spills, sega should return

“Erm i take it your referring to the dreamcast bro………..”

Er, yeah. Did the fact that I was talking about the Dreamcast give it away?

“When sonys blood spills, sega should return”

You have a very long wait. Sony are not going to be leaving the console industry because they are the strongest brand in home consoles having sold more in 13 years than Nintendo have in 30.

“personally think microsoft is the only answer to a sega like console”

Dumbest quote ever. Xbox consoles exist purely to attract people way from console gaming and into Windows based PC gaming. The 360 is the least console like console ever released. On the other hand though you are right to compare the Dreamcast to the 360.

The previous consoles released by both companies were considered commercial failures.

Both consoles were rushed out before the latest PlayStation.

Both had better online capability than the PlayStation.

Both took a huge early lead over the PlayStation with massive initial sales especially in the US.

Both were far cheaper than the PlayStation.

Both ‘didn’t need’ the next generation media disc format that the new PlayStation came with and stuck with the previous generations format.

Wouldn’t be half bad if they could get a good Sonic game for once.

The Dreamcast was an awesome system. I have 2 dreamcasts and 5 sega genesis’. I personally think their better than Xbox and Playstation. I haven’t found a good game yet for any new consoles. I hope this is more than a rumour.

Eh, Sega should’nt come back in the console run. Bad enough their only hero was “Sonic” any how, Sega just keeps to stay away from consoles and just keep working with nintendo.

Norbit i was not cussing you bro by the way………….

The reason i think the xbox brand is more like a sega machine is because they seem to chuck the xbox more sega titles. Not any other reasons.

I see yout points aswell tho

And i think once was said about sega being to big to crumble. And they did indeed crumble.

From sega worlds and pirate tv and genesis to daytonas and virtua fighters, Sega indeed did loose a lot of credibility over the years for various other reasons but………..I dont think they should be ignored or discredited for any of there work in the industry. If some of there games were not around how would the standard be for video games.

I know iv gone of subject a bit but a s a fanboy for sega lol, Thought id give them some props and big ups and hope for a new console one day

Aw the dreamcast controller wasn’t bad. In fact I would say it is superior to the xbox or playstation controllers which despite that are dominate players in this age. Sony still puts the D-pad in the primary position. WTF we live in the year 2000 people.

Anyway sega shouldn’t even bother if this is true. Consumers wouldn’t like it. Developers wouldn’t like it. Competition is good, but splintering the user base even more is bad news too. They would fail no matter how good their console is just because of overcrowding.

@kareem, you may live in the year 2000, but the rest of sane and time machine-less world lives in the year 2007, join us, there are 360′s, ps3′s and wii’s here

Not really the truth tho mate. Xbox exists purely to attract prople away from gaming………….
I dont have a clue why you would even think this?
That is indeed the stupidist comment i have ever herd norbit

Well, anyway, Sony is going down with their PayStation 3  (Thank GOD!!!!) and that leaves a wide open door for a new SEGA console and clean competition again. Because “clean” competition with Sony, no way!

So this is possible, and if they’ve got sponsors to get them back on the race, i’ll definitly buy one!

Dreamcast won’t be it’s new name, but as SEGA is really good in keeping secrets (unlike Sony, Microsoft and others  ), we’ll only know the name and specifications of the system when they’ll want us to… And believe me, they don’t want us to know anything for now. They won’t say they’re back before it’s time to say…

Anyway, let’s wait and see what’s coming and keep our mouths shut about the name SEGA before knowing what’s coming because it’s really annoying to see people that are always saying crap about SEGA just bacause a “friend” said it was bad. You want your own opinion and the right to talk? Then try the system or shut up!!!

I’ve said it!

The chances of Sega coming back to the console market is slim, the competition is just too high to make it worth while.

I’ve said this a long time ago, the single best thing Sega could do at this moment is to merge completely with Nintendo and to start developing games with them….i know they have an Olympic game coming out but i believe then need to go a bit deeper.

Super Smash Bros. with Sonic, knuckles and tails? Yes please.
