Sunset Overdrive Will Push Players to “Interact With Everything”
Sunset Overdrive will drop players into a colorful, comical “Awesomepocalypse.”
That, at least, was the message that Insomniac Games tried to deliver in a recent interview and preview where it offered up some of the first concrete details gamers have been privy to. According to the developer, the game will take place in Sunset City, a futurescape dominated by the tyrannical company Fizzco which has unintentionally unleashed a wave of mutants with its toxic energy drink Overcharge Delirium XT. This zaniness, according to creative director Marcus Smith, is an attempt on Insomniac’s part to give gamers a brighter happier apocalypse to play in.
“We wanted to have the Apocalypse, but turn it on it’s head and have it fun in the end times,” said Smith. “The way that we wanted to present that was have a very colorful world, have a place that you want to experience, and want to walk around and look around every corner.”
The game, in turn, will provide players with numerous ways to move around the city including wall running, rail sliding and a variety of other methods that the company hopes will keep players moving and interested in the game’s world.
“We are building off the idea that this isn’t a cover shooter. We don’t want people cowering behind cover,” said Smith. “We want to get people out and about and interacting, so that’s not just a way to get around the city but how to interact with everything.”
To help encourage player mobility Insomniac will be integrating a Style Meter that will improve player’s abilities and weapons the more they move around the city. The game will also feature a Style skill tree that will allow players to improve their characters with upgrades the company is calling Amps. Alongside this will be a variety of weapons intentionally designed to fall on the crazier side of the scale as well as crafting system and extensive customization features aimed at allowing gamers to create exactly the kind of character they want to make.
