Survival Horror Title Outlast Locks You in the Asylum (TRAILER)
We’ve only gotten a few glimpses of Red Barrels Games’ Outlast, its upcoming Unreal Engine-based first-person survival horror game for PC — until now.
For Halloween, the studio has released a longer teaser trailer for the game, which takes place in the Massive Mountain Insane Asylum. It appears the inmates are out in the asylum, and players will do a lot of running and hiding to escape them. I’m definitely getting a faster-moving Amnesia: The Dark Descent vibe from the footage, and it reminds also of the Erie, another horror game in which all you can do is flee and hope you don’t die.
Red Barrels’s title sounds promising, though, and the studio has the pedigree to back it up. Three former developers from Ubisoft and Naughty Dog founded the company, with previous work on franchises including Uncharted, Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed under their belts.
As for the trailer, Red Barrels says it’s “highly scripted,” but it’s built with the in-game engine — which means it’s somewhere between a cutscene or CGI trailer and a gameplay trailer. It’s not exactly how the game will move or feel when it becomes available, but the devs say they wanted to give an impression of what the game will be like, and thus made the trailer a little more involved than just pre-alpha gameplay footage.
Outlast is set to hit Steam in Summer 2013.
