SWTOR Dev Diary Talks Legacy System
From Game Update 1.2: Legacy, unlocking your Legacy grants you access to a newly expanded Legacy Panel (accessed, by default, by pressing the ‘Y’ key) where you can modify your family tree, and see what Legacy Rewards you have unlocked.
As of Game Update 1.2, the Legacy Panel will no longer be a placeholder UI element, but a functional interface through which you can see what Legacy Rewards you have unlocked. All characters part of a Legacy can be arranged in a sort of customizable family tree based on their relationship: father, rival, brother, adopted child, ally, or father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate. Well, maybe not that last one.
The characters in your Legacy will be able to earn global unlocks, which are abilities, emotes, and other rewards shared across all characters in your Legacy. For instance, when you complete Chapter 2 with a given class, your characters unlock the ability to apply that class’ unique buff along with their own.
After one of your characters completes Chapter 3, that character gets to pass on a special ‘Heroic Ability’ to all the characters in his Legacy. A Sith Warrior will pass on Force Choke, for instance. To prevent this from breaking game balance and roleplay flavor, the ability sees infrequent use and is only available when your companion is present.
Once you reach level 50 with a character, you unlock that character’s species for all classes, and by attaining high enough Legacy Levels and spending credits, players will be able to purchase unlockable items for their ship, such as a mailbox and neutral Galactic Trade Network terminal.
The team plans to keep building upon the Legacy System in 1.3, adding per-character perks that are not shared globally amongst your Legacy.
I think I need to roll up a new character.
