Techland Catching Flak for Offensive ‘Feminist Whore’ Ability in Dead Island Code

The disaster of the PC release of Dead Island is deepening for Techland after code-searching Internet sleuths discovered an offensive name attached to an ability that remains in early code for the game.

The chunk of code refers to an ability for player character Purna called “FeministWhore,” which was left in early code of the game that was never supposed to be seen. (The code was discovered by Aleksei Vasiliev and posted in the Steam forums, then tweeted by one Duncan Harris and picked up by PC Gamer.)

From PC Gamer, here’s the code:
“The name is not visible in the game itself, but can be seen in the file structure within Data0.pak\Data\default_player_setup.scr

sub Skills_Purna(){
Skill(“TeamSpirit1Purna”);
Skill(“SharpApprenticePurna”);
[...]
Skill(“TeamSpirit2Purna”);
Skill(“FeministWhorePurna”);
Skill(“MeleeDurabilityPurna”);
[...]
}”

The trouble is that Techland claims the release of the PC version of Dead Island is an earlier developer build — in fact, an Xbox 360 dev build port, apparently — that was never ever supposed to see the light of day. And yet it was shipped out to everyone. Full of bugs. The reference to the ability in question, according to an interview between Techland and Eurogamer, was never supposed to make it to the eyes of consumers.

“It obviously violates professional and ethical standards at Techland and should never have happened,” Blazej Krakowiak, international brand manager, said during that interview. “We’re investigating this right now and we’ll issue a statement later.

“For now, I can only express my sincerest apologies for this incident and assure you that whoever acted so irresponsibly did not represent the views and opinions of Techland.

“I’m equally sure that aside from the author of that unfortunate line of code, everyone at the office is as disturbed by this as you are.”

Techland and Deep Silver have already apologized for the wrong version being made available to PC players, and a release said Deep Silver intends to “make up” for the debacle with players — though we’re not sure what that means yet. Meanwhile, reportedly, Dead Island will get another monster patch on Friday that should fix it altogether.

Of course, we’ll have to wait and see.

This is astonishing. Obviously, there’s no way short of a keyword search by the person who actually slipped this ‘hilarious’ joke into the game to find this kind of content before the game goes gold, but come on, what the hell was he thinking? This reminds me of that Peep Show episode where Mark sneaks into the office at night to pee on his boss’s desk and totally gets caught doing it. Only not hilarious because this is sexist BS.

The more I hear about this game the more disappointed I am.
