Teenager Foils PS3 Thieves With Samurai Sword

SamuraiAnd now for something completely different. A Florida teenager used a samurai sword to chase off a burglar who was attempting to steal his PS3 console.

Damian Fernandez, who holds a brown belt in karate, was home with his sister Friday afternoon when they heard a knock on the front door. As their parents were at work, they didn’t answer the door. To their surprise, moments later they heard the sounds of prying as two men attempted to force their way into the house. With his sister hiding in the closet, where she watched the burglars kick in her bedroom door, Damian went for his sword. “Once I saw him take off running back, I jumped off my (bunk) bed and I grabbed my sword â$¦ and I just waited for him,” he said. When the burglar reappeared, Damian lunged at him, striking him in the chest with the sword. Damian chased the perpetrators down the road, and police found one of them hiding behind a neighbor’s palm tree.

The burglars had apparently found the empty PS3 box, and were searching the house for the console. I imagine they were more than a little surprised to find a kid wielding a sword coming after them. Of course, with the current price tag on a PS3, I think I’d be willing to toss a sword around to protect mine too!

I don’t think that the kid was trying to protect his PS3, but instead of his sister and general property.

I dont think his sister is worth $600… especially if the kid is a Sony Fanboy, which he must be, if he bought the damn thing in the first place…. Cheers to him though, he definitely reminds me of one of my friends… Animefreaknerdjocktrackhurdlergamerninjasamuraiwannabehairymonkeyandallaroundpal Bender….

Very impressive, but I’m forced to agree with Jayer. What if it’s just a gimmick? is there proof that the burglar was wounded? There isn’t even a picture of the arrested criminals…. or something.

I don’t know if he was wounded or not, but if you follow the source link in the article, there’s local news coverage of the incident.

He’s protecting the PS3 that his sister bought with her hard work as a high-priced escort at the last E3. Gettin’ money outta gamer geeks ain’t easy! Had to play with their joysticks for hours using special codes (up, down, up, down, left, right, START!) and still they wouldn’t pay up in anything but Gil or Gella.

 The samurai sword was not real, I heard it was apparently a nintendo Wii controller, the burgler was high on drugs so he couldn’t tell the difference, the boy was actually a girl called miller and the cat was in the sink (for some unknown reason)

A SWORD?? if i had a PS3 and had to defend it form burglars…i’d probably ripp their hearts off with my teeth and spit them on their family. here in argentina a PS3 costs $3500 what is about 3 normal (quite high) salaries, that may make you reconsider the value of your life… a PS3 or a “chance” to lose your life?? i thik i’d took my chances..

 that nick dude has no sense of family , e.g”I dont think his sister is worth $600!” and although a ps3 is rather valubull, how many of you would put one over a member of fammilys life , dude if you realy think that, you are a   kid!.

I think the teen acted very bravely. I spent many after school days with my sisters at home and our parents at work. I can’t imagine doing what this kid did as a teenager, especially if he was around 13-14. If it was his younger sister say like 7-8 hiding, wouldn’t you do the same for your sister!?

Kudos to the ninja kid! F’n thieves spotted the box in the trash. I burnt my 42″ Aquos box for this reason. Thieves are clever, and sometimes F’n stupid.

No swords for me these days. At 35 daddy has Glocks to protect his loved ones and valuables.

A friend and I were walking down the street, when we got really thirsty, and there were no water around, suddenly we saw a kitchen door that was slightly open
and a glass fo fresh icy water just lying there on the table, we could`nt help but to try an grab it and drink, the minute we walked in a crazed boy with a friggin` ninja sword jumped us, and before we could say anything he started yelling and slashing away at us, we barly made it out alive, they should really restrict the games they sell to kids man, we were this close to cash our tickets and go up to the big console in the sky…

I think swords are the coolest en gift the lord has ever given me. espescially the katana. I think of myself as true samurai. I don’t keep my swords on the wall for show, I en like to smash with them. and I could play all day with them , but my social worker has them in her van, and she lets me see them once a week(what a fat en cow). Oh well , I stilll have my wooden katana, so I am happy enough. Oh I think the ninja are cool too, but the ninja’s are reall ’s because they have to hide from there enemy. A samurai faces there enemy head on and never backs down to a fight. I am so glad I got rid of my actions movies and video game set, because It takes away from the time I need to train. you ninja’s, you.

“what the hell is he doing with a samurai sword anyway hs thirteen if i had one when i was thirteen i would have stabbed something by accident”
Did you not read the first sentence in the second paragraph? The kid is a brown belt in karate. Do you not realize how high up the ranks that is? Of course he’s going to have weapons on hand. He trains with them! And he’s trained to the point where he knows how to safely handle these weapons, so stabbing people by accident is far from likely. He’s an experienced martial artist. He knew what he was doing, much to the surprise of the robbers.

wow. this kid is a ninja.

Pedro Vieira

On October 5, 2008 at 2:53 pm

This is irresponsible behaviour.

The kid could risk his life defending the console. It’s a bit hard to play if you’re dead or paralised.

It’s fun to joke about the incident but this could have ended up in severe injure or even death for the boy.

Good story, though!

Well good for him,
Community service or a small jail service isn’t going to change those men a bit!

Striking fear into those criminals will leave a permanent mark on their record.
