Testing Starts on Old Republic, Bioware Fans “Dream Game”

ss2_1600x900 Bioware has started user testing on its upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, and its creators believe it will be the company’s fans’ “dream game.”

If you’re not in the first dream test group, there’s still time – sign up on Bioware’s web site and you might still have a chance to try out your very own starship.

Lead writer Daniel Erickson told CVG the game will encompass lots of the best aspects of its Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, on PC, anyway.

“If you are a hardcore, traditional Bioware fan – a Mass Effect or especially Dragon Quest fan – this is the dream game,” Erickson said. “It is an RPG forever. It is an RPG that at the speed and pace that I play RPGs as a gamer, five or ten hours a week. I could never finish this game.”

But story is going to be a major part of the game, so MMO fans who aren’t into it may not enjoy The Old Republic.

“But if the idea of story and context really turns you off, if what you want is the just complete Disneyland experience, where you run on the rides and repeat the stuff, this probably isn’t your favorite MMO,” Erickson said.

Leaning hard on the story is good news, given Bioware’s phenomenal Knights of the Old Republic for Xbox and PC back in 2003. Capturing the Star Wars essence is key for The Old Republic, and that means strength in narrative.

The Old Republic is expected to launch in Spring 2011.
