Borderlands 2 Level Cap Increase Drops Today. For $4.99

Finally. The Borderlands 2 level cap increase became available today after months of teasing from Gearbox Software, along with a new play mode that extends the life of your playable character considerably. As confirmed 2 weeks ago, the level cap increase isn’t bundled with the upcoming new DLC character, but it isn’t free either; it’s available as part of a $4.99 DLC pack.

The increase comes as part of the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack, which raises level cap to 61, and awards a skill point for every new level achieved (that’s 11 new skill points, by the by). It also adds “Ancient” E-Tech relics and rare Pearlescent-grade weapons, only available in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. Weirdly enough, the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack doesn’t actually add Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode to your game. That comes as part of a free software update that fixes various bugs, increases max Eridium players can hold to 500, and adds new items to the black market to give you something to spend your Eridium on. (Sadly, you still can’t trade Eridium between characters or other players like money. Sigh.)

As for Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, it’s a third tier new game plus, available after you complete the campaign in True Vault Hunter Mode and have also reached level 50. Here are the details:

Unlike other playthroughs, Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode can be replayed multiple times with players able to reset their overall mission progress at any time from the Main Menu.

No more tutorial missions — characters in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode begin in Southern Shelf with the “Cleaning Up the Berg” mission.

While playing in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, enemies and bosses will scale according to the player’s current level or, if playing with others, the highest-level player in that party.

Gameplay changes in UVHM:

Enemy health generally increased 4x.
Enemies now have a moderate amount of health regeneration.
Increased duration of slag damage multiplier effect.
Upped the damage that slagged enemies take from 2x to 3x.
Weapon swap speed increased to better facilitate slag use.
Enemies now more likely to drop ammo.
Loot Midgets are now “Legendary Loot Midgets” that can drop Legendary and other top-tier gear.

The new mode launched today on PC and Xbox 360, and is coming to Playstation 3 “soon”. We’ll be paying attention to fan reaction to see how well the paid-requirement for the level cap increase goes over.

Didnt they say just 2 weeks ago that they wouldnt be charging for the level increase?

Also, what else is included in this 5 buck DLC? Or is Ultimate Vault Hunter mode essentially the DLC?

Axetwin, notice they were very, very specific in how they responded to that question. They didn’t say it would be free, they only said it would be part of its own DLC and not bundled with the DLC character. Very cagey.

Also, Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode is added by a free software update, but the level cap is paid.

That’s some EA crap right there.

Thanks for the clarification. Like Axetwin, I thought they said that they wouldn’t be charging for something like this, so I was quite surprised to find out it was going to be $5. Since it’s part of the season pass, I’ll take it, especially since I stopped playing when I hit the cap, and I would like to continue on while earning XP.

I have a follow up question for you, Ross. If memory serves, the season pass was to include four pieces of DLC, and this cap increase would be number four, so is this going to be it for pass related content? I know the two DLC characters were not part of the pass, and I’m disappointed to think that something like this would be the final part of the pass content since it doesn’t quite live up to the idea of “4 for the price of 3,” as I see it.

That’s a fair worry, but fortunately they’re not so craven. There is one more story-based DLC coming that will count as the final big pack of DLC. It’ll be along the lines of Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt, Captain Scarlett and Torgue.

Is the levelcap removed only at the Ultimate Vault Hunter mode playthrough, because I’m currently playing through True Vault Hunter mode and my level (50) aint increasing?
