XCOM: Declassified Live-Action Finale, Starring Dominic Monaghan
2K held a live web conference yesterday to discuss the live-action video series for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, with actor Dominic Monaghan and director Henry Hobson. We got an exclusive screening of the conclusion to the series, which was released today.
Monaghan — of Lost and The Lord of the Rings fame — stars in the series as Agent Cole, a member of a covert group that defends humanity from outside threats. The year? 1962. The vibe? X-Files.
Hobson executes the series with finessed cinematography. The filming involves a lot of close angles, quick cuts, dramatic lighting, and hand-helm cams. The props and special effects are near Hollywood quality, and Hobson made sure to blend in elements that tie the series to the game. The director explained that once Monaghan became involved in the project, it allowed for the telling of a much more emotional story.
During the Q&A segment, it was revealed that both Monahagan and Hobson are gamers. Monaghan has always desired to become involved in the industry and in fact has a game idea he’ll be pitching to 2K. While he plays a variety of games, his most noteworthy gamer credential consists of over 300 hours spent in Skyrim.
Monaghan believes that Hollywood has been developing an increased interest in the industry due to the fact that games are getting to a very sophisticated level — they’ve come a long way since Asteroids.
Hobson’s favorite games included The Last of Us, for which he designed the title sequence, and Resistance 3, for which he directed the live-action train trailer.
