The Final Borderlands 2 DLC is Out Today

It seems those announcements of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel recently are heralding the end of the seemingly endless parade of DLC for Borderlands 2.

The final bit of downloadable content, Headhunter 5: Sir Hammerlock versus the Son of Crawmerax, is available today on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 to the tune of $2.99. Here’s the rundown from the 2K Games press release:

“Join Sir Hammerlock along with Brick, Mordecai, and Lilith for a relaxing vacation on Wam Bam Island as you play the biggest Headhunter add-on in the series. At the end of your adventure, you will battle a foe that may look familiar – Crawmerax Jr., the son of the great crab worm from The Secret Armory of General Knoxx add-on from the original Borderlands.”

As mentioned, however, most notable about this last bit of DLC is probably the fact that Gearbox seems to be officially moving forward from Borderlands 2, a game that was released on Sept. 20, 2012, more than 18 months ago. Anyone who pays attention to game releases and DLC knows that’s a pretty long tail for a game; it’s rare that DLC lasts more than a year for a single title, and suggests Borderlands 2 was an even bigger deal than we might have originally conceived.

Gearbox now is working with 2K Australia on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which we caught at PAX East 2014 last weekend and will have more to tell you about this week. Gearbox has also hinted at work on a new, unannounced next-gen game. If Borderlands 2 was able to keep players interested (and purchasing DLC) a year and a half after it first hit digital download portals and store shelves, I think it’s probably pretty obvious what that other game is that Gearbox is working on.

I’m speaking, of course, about Aliens: Colonial Marines 2.

I’ve been waiting for them to get done with these headhunter packs for a while since I would rather hear news about progress on Borderlands 3. The headhunter packs haven’t been anywhere near the quality of the large DLC packs, so tacking on several months of working on the headhunter packs seemed like a bit of a waste. Although, I suppose since there wasn’t much meat on the bones of these packs it means that only part of the team was working on them while the rest were working on Borderlands 3.
