The Last of Us Leads Taking Over Uncharted 4 Development

Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann are the new leads for Uncharted 4.

The duo’s new position was revealed today in an interview with Naughty Dogs co-presidents Evan Wells and Christopher Balestra. When asked at one point about the Straley and Druckmann’s participation in the project, Wells confirmed that they were taking officially taking up the game’s reins.

“We’ve asked them to lead the project,” said Wells. They are excited as veterans of the Uncharted franchise to take the responsibility and they’re doing great.”

Prior to this announcement the two had been assisting in the game’s development following the departure of lead writer Amy Hennig and director Justin Richmond from Naughty Dog. Back when that news initially broke, some had suspected that the two had, in part, been forced out of the company by Straley and Druckmann who earned accolades for 2013’s hit game The Last of Us. This rumor was later denied by Naughty Dog.

The question now, of course, is whether or not the two are up for the task of guiding the new Uncharted. Considering the fine work they did on The Last of Us, as well as their previous experience working on earlier Uncharted games, all signs would seem to pointing toward a resounding “yes.”

Not terribly surprising considering the sudden departure of key personnel. I’m sure it was a lot easier to avoid major disruption by making this move.

Seems like an obvious move.

Both of these guys wrote the storyline for Uncharted 2, then moved to TLOU and Hennig took over for Uncharted 3. I still consider U2 > U3, especially in terms of story. I felt that U3′s story was definitely lacking and a step backwards. I think these Straley and Druckmann are what U4 needs.
