The Long, Confusing Timeline of the Metal Gear Series (PIC)

Unless you’re a hardcore Metal Gear Solid fan, chances are you can’t make heads or tails of the overall timeline. It doesn’t help that Hideo Kojima loves to pull fast ones on his fans, which only complicates things further. Thankfully, we’ve got a truncated timeline for every game in the series to catch you up in time for Metal Gear Solid 5. Ever wonder just what the hell happened in Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4? Need a quick refresher course on Metal Gear Solid? Curious as to what happens in Peace Walker? We’ve got you covered. It goes without saying, though, that this timeline is jam packed with spoilers. I think it’s worth noting (if we are going to be EXTREMELY geeky about this) that MG:Rising is, technically, not canon. Now, determining what is canon in Metal Gear is hardly a perfect science, and I know Kojima said in an interview at one point that the game was canon… but that was before it was handed to Platinum and he’s hedged those words since then, describing the game as a “parallel” story.

Most importantly, the game remains absent from the official Konami timeline for the series: http://metalgearsolid.com/app/webroot/timeline/

I finally understand everything clearly. Very well done done guys. I just purchased the metal gear solid hd collection and was looking to refresh my memory on the storyline and this gave me everything I needed. +1,000

MGS rising is plenty cannon. in this, kojima’s word is law. for it to be labeled as a “parallel” storyline is just saying that its not about big boss or his children and that it takes place after solid snake presumably retires.
and to be fair, a lot of games were left out of their time line.

after MGS5, most of the history will be playable and i hope we’ll be able to see something creative with upcoming games now that they are forced to push into the future. i hope to see something like Solid Snake’s biological son or something else crafty instead of possibly seeing another clone thing. but whatever kojima does, i’m sure it will be cool.

Only thing missing is the fact that at some point EVA gave birth to Big Boss’ sons. That’s a pretty crucial element to this. Also wouldn’t hurt to say that Big Boss and Zero formed The Patriots, and then Kaz and Big Boss formed FOX after Big Boss was betrayed by The Patriots for Les Enfants Terrible.
