Lord of the Rings Online Content Updates Announced for 2013

The developers at Turbine have been relatively quiet since releasing the Riders of Rohan expansion pack for Lord of the Rings Online. The Riders of Rohan expansion pack included new features like mounted combat, resolved thousands of issues, and saw the addition of over half a million words of new story content. In addition to the expansion, the studio added The Great River region and revised all the quest lines in Moria.

Today, the game’s senior producer Aaron Campbell published an open letter to the community with updates about the studio’s plans for Middle Earth this year, with new content scheduled for release in the earlier half of 2013. Here’s what’s in store:

Rohan Instance Cluster (Part 2) – [Spoiler!]  The highlight of this cluster is the raid spaces, which together tell the story of the Battle of Dale from the sacking of Dale through to the heroic last stand at the Siege of Erebor.  “The Bells of Dale” is a 6-person space set in Dale during its final hours.  “Flight to the Lonely Mountain,” “The Fires of Smaug” and “The Battle for Erebor” are 12-person raids that set you against armies of Easterlings and their massive war machines.

Class Skills – In years gone by the LOTRO team has conducted class “Month Of” events to make changes and improvements to the classes.  Heading into 2013, we are looking into player feedback in regards to skills (ones that are great and ones that really aren’t) and overall progression.  Advancing through current and future levels should have a real payoff, and the class should feel different as you progress and grow your abilities.

And what else…  More Scaled Instances (“In Your Absence” – welcome back to Ost Dunhoth).  More landscape quests and Epic Story.  Rebalanced loot drops for skirmishes and scaling instances.

The updates will be made available from now until the middle half of this year.

” Heading into 2013, we are looking into player feedback in regards to skills (ones that are great and ones that really aren’t) and overall progression.”

Ooooh thats a rookie mistake and you hate to see them make it. You never EVER turn to open fan feedback when it comes to input about class skills. Heres why, because the discussion always and I mean ALL-WAYS turns into a “this skill used by this class (that Ive never played) is OP and needs to be nerfed”.

Axetwin – so who should they ask? IGN? Just because they’re asking gamers doesn’t mean they’ll take everything into consideration, it just means they’re communicating with people who actually bought, own and play the game. I don’t see how that’s a bad thing, even if it means some of the feedback will be stupid. It can’t be any worse than they’d get from the lick-arse mainstream press.

And the game isn’t PvP if I recall, so there’s less reason to maliciously try to nerf classes that aren’t yours. If anything, considering it’s PvE, you might get the opposite problem, and calling too much underpowered.
