The Pandemic Begins in Montreal in Ambitious RPG, ReRoll

The devs at start-up studio Pixyul want the Earth to be your RPG playground.

Pixyul is using drones to map the Earth one section at a time and transform real-life environments into 3D objects for their highly ambitious survival/action game, ReRoll, and they just unveiled what the first playable section will be: downtown Montreal.

In the video above we get a first look at the map as well as a set-up for the global pandemic storyline ReRoll features.

ReRoll is a crowdfunding project and various character packages priced from $20 to $275 USD are now up for sale in the Pixyul shop. No word on a specific funding goal (this thing certainly won’t be cheap), but the devs say downtown Montreal should be ready for backers by mid-2015.

Fascinating concept, I’m just not sure how Pixyul will be able to pull this off via crowdfunding. Certainly one to watch, though.

I think that if they can deliver on a decent product with the Montreal portion, they will draw many more backers in from there. Crowdfunding will likely continue over the long-term. Frankly, this is an ambitious sort of undertaking, one that is long overdue. Truthfully, the AAA developers have the money to pull off something like this, they just don’t want to take the risk. If Pixyul pulls it off, I believe they will bring about a new generation of games that simply haven’t existed to this point.
