The Playstation Network is Down! (Update 2: Yep, it was hackers)

Update 2: Sony is finally admitted that PSN has been down for almost two days because of hacker douchebags, and Sony themselves took the network down so as to do security things and whatever. Still no word on when they think it’ll be back up. I’m glad I’m not a Sony engineer. The full statement from Patrick Seybold:

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

Update: We have a new statement from the PS blog.

While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running. Thank you very much for your patience while we work to resolve this matter.

So, yeah, I can’t log in to the PSN, and many others all over the world seem to be having problems as well. When I turn on my console, I’m greeted with this message: “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of the Playstation Network.”

The Playstation Blog made a note of this: “We’re aware certain functions of PlayStation Network are down. We will report back here as soon as we can with more information.” Some of the commenters there say their connections are fine, so I really don’t know how widespread this deal is, but everybody does seem to be talking about it, so I assume it’s not small potatoes.

Kotaku says the folks in Sony support were sent the following email:

Due to emergency maintenance all PlayStation®Network and Qriocity services including stores, account management, external auths and CST are currently unavailable since approx 5am GMT this morning.

We don’t yet have an estimated time as to when services will be restored but will provide further updates when they are available.

Emergency maintenance, huh? Makes you wonder if any of those Anonymous folks had anything to do with this? Although some part of them did say they’d lay off Sony, you never know with groups like that. They can be, uh, erratic.

Ugh, this is keeping me from playing SOCOM 4 online.

I had a baseball game on 4-20-11 so I didnt know psn was down. Then I tried to play zombies online on 4-21-11 and it kept saying i was singed out. i googled it and said i was hacked or somethings wrong with my router. It freaked me out and i turned off the ps3 and i googled it again and i figured out psn is having trouble. i just hoped psn didnt get hacked.
