The Witness: Jonathan Blow Once Again Betting the Farm
Jonathan Blow appears to be living within his own Braid-like time warp.
The indie developer, who famously spent every penny he had (as well as thousands of pennies from others), going $40,000 in debt to make and complete Braid, has once again bet the farm on his new game, The Witness.
In a pretty terrific interview with Indie Haven, Blow, in typical fashion, shares his unvarnished thoughts on the gaming industry. He also provides an update on The Witness, the 3D adventure/exploration/puzzle game he’s been working on since 2009. Of note, Blow said he has spent all the money he made from Braid and more.
“Practically speaking, all of the money from Braid has gone into The Witness… and then some, because we spent all that and got a little bit of funding to finish the game.”
What’s that mean in terms of dollars? In November Blow revealed the budget for The Witness:
The budget for The Witness is something like 3-4 million, and even then we will be running on fumes by the end of development.

Braid went on to become the highest rated Xbox Live game ever and sell an estimated 500,000 copies. As a fan, I’m hoping The Witness is a repeat of Braid’s success.
As for The Witness itself, it’s looking gorgeous and is slated for a mid-2014 release on PC, IOS and PlayStation 4.
