While it hasn’t turned into an epidemic, many owners of the PC edition of Dishonored are experiencing a fatal crash error that renders the game unplayable. The issue affects people using an ATI graphics card, and involves suddenly ceasing to function, then displaying a cascading error stream before crashing and returning players to the desktop. Once it happens, it will not work again, which really, really sucks since the game isn’t freeware.

This is obviously a major pain in the ass (and once again, proof that developers really are playing favorites with Nvidia,) but Bethesda has suggested a fix that appears to work for most people who suffer the problem. This fix may not have universal applicability, but if you experience the error, try the following:

* Install the game on your C: drive.
* Check the game’s cache integrity.
* Revert to an earlier version of ATI’s Catalyst drivers.

If you’ve experienced this error, let us know in comments if this fix works. And in the meantime, the rest of you could consider customizing your Dishonored experience with our handy guide to .ini tweaks.

It’s amazing that devs get away with basically ignoring ATI. Something this serious really should have been caught, but a lot of devs only test Nvidia.

Give me a break. I just finished and I’m going through a second time to do everything a little different and I have yet to have a crash or bug of any sort and I’m using an ATI HD 7950. The fact that the game is this good and this bug free is amazing and a nice change of pace.
No, I give this game two big thumbs way way up.

I’m on a Nvidia card (GTX570) and I’m getting this issue. I managed to get it to work by verifying cache integrity. This lasts after the verify but then stops after playing the game meaning I have to check it again :P

Isn’t just ATI, same issue with an nVidia 580, so no one playing “Favorites” like the writer stated blankly.

game crashes on entering golden cat or distillery. I’ve tried the windowed option (as recommended on some sites) and it still crashes. I’m running on Nvidia (Extremely biased journalism btw) any advice on fixing this would be nice.
