THQ Trademarks ’1666′

When we set about analyzing THQ’s core franchises, analyzing THQ’s future we did so in the shadow of a very bad year for the company. It might have been easy at the time to assume massive layoffs and the death of several divisions, not to mention that pesky Adidas Lawsuit, might put a crimp in their style, but it seems they’re plugging ahead without interruption, and we might now have an idea where.

THQ has 6 currently untitled projects in the works. They haven’t made any announcement, but the US office of Patents and Trademarks confirms they’ve trademarked ’1666′. And that’s literally all we know. VG 24/7 points out that 1666 just happens to be the year of the London Fire, which might hint toward a historical-themed game. It could just as easily refer to some esoteric concept we’ll need a codex to understand. Consider ‘Mass Effect’; would you have guessed it’s a science fiction epic based solely on the name?

It’s also quite possible they’re trademarking tangentially related names or even goofing us to obscure what the project really is, similar to how Rockstar likes to trademark things like ‘GTA Columbia’ before inevitably releasing yet another game set in Liberty City. We’ll let you know as soon as we do.

As publishers, they let die S.T.A.L.K.E.R. That’s all.
