UPDATE (March 22, 2012): Eight months ago, we brought you the top 10 Minecraft mods. Since then, the game has officially launched, new mods have emerged, some mods stopped being updated, and the community has evolved. So we’ve gone ahead and updated this list with the current top 10 Minecraft mods, and plan to keep this page updated periodically.
Minecraft will soon be turning into a roguelike, adding paint to the blank canvas that allowed for the modding community to create such diverse and deep mods for this hit indie game. How will this move affect the modding community? Will it open more doors, or will it infringe on modders’ creative freedom?
We don’t know, but you’d best take advantage of the awesome mods currently available now, just in case.
Last week, we brought you the top 10 best Minecraft maps; now, here are ten of the most popular Minecraft mods.
10. SDK’s Mods
This mod earned the #5 spot when we first ran this list, and making #10 eight months later is nothing to be ashamed of. SDK’s mods add a variety of interesting things: a grappling hook, nightvision goggles, a scuba tank, a parachute, a jet pack, a variety of grenades, and an arsenal of guns: AK47, MP5, sniper rifle, shotgun, flamethrower, desert eagle, rocket launcher, laser-guided rocket launcher, SG552, Gatling gun, and more. Watch the video to see the guns in action.
9. Better Than Wolves Mod
This complex, single-player only mod adds a great deal of items, and new functionality for engineering and designing. Its curious name is a jab at the wolf mob that was introduced in Minecraft Beta 1.4 — the author wished to create something that added more gameplay value while requiring less work to implement. Better Than Wolves is organized into distinct “Ages” that represent different stages of technological progress. Each Age is in turn organized into separate Tiers that represent separate tasks that the player must achieve in order to progress to the next Tier.
8. Portal Gun – Reconstructed
Previously coming in at #7, this mod has only dropped one spot on our list in eight months. As the trailer shows, Portal Gun – Reconstructed lets you play Portal in Minecraft by allowing you to build a portal gun.
This mod is aimed at allowing users to build advanced structures and mechanisms, and is so popular that instruction manuals are being sold. Blueprints, pipes, quarries, auto-crafting, engines… It’s that complex.
6. Millénaire – NPC village
Millénaire — which is French for Millennium — is a single-player mod for Minecraft that aims to fill the emptiness of single-player worlds by adding NPC villages to it, with loose 11th-century Norman, North Indian and Mayans themes.
Villages are populated with men, women and children of various kinds, who perform tasks such as trading with the player, expending current buildings or improving existing ones, cultivating crops such as wheat in Norman villages and rice in Indian ones, crafting tools and powerful amulets, and more. As a village expands, the number of villagers increases as couples have children who grow up into new adults.
