Hordes of gamers have lost count of the number of hours they’ve sank into Morrowind, and as Skyrim continues to build steam, the urge to revisit the earlier installments of the Elder Scrolls series has never been stronger.

So if you find yourself reaching for the installation CD, here are a ten great Morrowind mods that may add a little spice to your playthrough.

10. Morrowind Comes Alive

All around me are familiar faces, worn out places, worn out faces…

This mod adds 1000 NPCs with random heads, hair, and equipment that appear at — and disappear from — locations at random times to emulate the coming and going of travelers. Why? To make Morrowind feel more dynamic. The video above is a sample of some random NPCs you can encounter.

9. Gladiator

This mod, which I affectionately call the “Russell Crowe mod,” allows players to fight gladiatorial battles in the Vivec arena in a series of increasingly difficult battles, eventually becoming champion.

A new NPC, Arena Master Titus, awaits in a new area called the Battle Preparation Pit. The Battle Preparation Pit is accessed through the same door that previously took you to the main arena pit. Speak to Titus about “fight” to begin your career as a gladiator.

8. Assassins Armoury

This mod, which contains over 100 new models, adds a large number of meticulously constructed, high-quality weapons to the game, including guns. Also included are defensive counterparts for both the existing and new weapons.

7. Earthly Delights

The obligatory sex-related mod on any top modding list, this simple mod adds a little more… “interactivity” to Desele’s House of Earthly Delights in Suran. A new female NPC named Ashe provides “bedroom services” for the player. It all happens off-screen, so it’s PG-13 at most.

6. Morrowind Sound Enhancement

This mod adds 29 new region-specific ambient sounds, including birds, crickets, wind, weather, and swamp life. It improves the quality of the stock footsteps, environment, combat, and magic sounds. Weapon swooshes and hits are of a greater quality, and magic attacks sound more intense.

Meh, not a very good top 10 list…I personally forgot about the marksmen mod, and I have been thinking about the morrowind comes alive mod for a while. Not sure about the better heads mod though, it kind of makes the people look too pretty.

However, it leaves out Galsiahs Character Development mod which replaces Bethesdas’ rather poor leveling system with a seamless system that automatically levels stats when using your skills, and removes the hard stat and level caps. Instead it makes it continuously harder to level the higher your skill levels get.

It also leaves out the texture pack. Which is a huge mod that overhauls just about every texture in game, vastly improving the graphic quality, and in some cases even reducing the texture size.

What really makes me not like this list is the inclusion of earthly delights mod. I am not a prude, but I got an upgraded version of it in Balmora expanded. I can’t be sure its in the original, I believe it is though, but in the Balmora expanded mod sleeping with a girl give you +1 permanent stat boost on 1 of 3 stats. Which is pretty much game breaking, as you can easily max all 3 stats.

Omg, just remembered Tamriel Rebuilt. As this list does not include it, this list automatically completely fails as a top 10 mod list for Morrowind. The goal is to build the entire province of Morrowind, since the game only takes place on the island. Which is probably less then 1/5 of the province. So far the TR team has only completed 1 part of the 6 planned, but in doing so they have roughly doubled the playable area. According to their site, two more sections should be playable shortly.

The guy commenting above me is quite wrong. It is an understatement to say that this list isn’t very good. It’s crap.

I think any further comments on this topic are unecessary.

This link has lots of mods, all better than the ones mentioned above.

I really like this list, it got me into modding morrowind, but I do have a big complaint with it. House of Earthly Delights mod is the specific mod but its not about its content being bad, its just it becomes obsolete with The Romance Mod or Lovers & Legends, especially when the Romance mod comes with prostitution…
