The Portal 2 mod authoring tools have been out for three weeks, and though the modding community is still fledgling, here are some of the most popular user-made test chambers that have been released to date.

All these science mods are made of asbestos, by the way — keeps out the rats. Let us know if you feel a shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough or your heart stopping, because that’s not part of the mod — that’s asbestos.

1. Colours

No, that’s not a typo. It’s the British spelling. Deal with it.

Once your eyes have recovered from the initial shock of those garish colors, you’ll be reassured to know that that is not an in-game screenshot, but an in-editor screenshot.

Colours is a co-op and single player map pack for Portal 2 which features custom textures, sounds, and puzzles. The focus is on synesthesia, puzzle solving, and cooperation.

Read more bout Colours here, or download the four maps in the Colours series here: Colours Co-Op Map 1, Colours Co-Op Map 2, Colours Co-Op Map 3, Colours Co-Op Map 4.

2. Identity

Identity is a work in progress, but three of the planned six test chambers are currently playable. Each chamber focuses on one Portal feature.

This haunting trailer speaks volumes more than any description can provide:

I get the impression this isn’t for Portal newbs.

3. Kl Test Map

Here is a small map that doesn’t require quick reflexes and complex timings, but it may still stump you for a good ten minutes as you think your way through it.

4. Lots of Faith

The above video shows a playthrough of this co-op test chamber filled with faith plates, those vertigo-inducing flippers that launch you into the air.

Don’t have a friend to play with? Just input a console command at the menu and you can play it solo.

5. Sphere of Roundness

No, this is not a product of the Department of Redundancy Department. It’s a small, 1940s-themed singleplayer sphere that needs testing. Although short, the quality is top-notch.

6. Surprise

The video above is a complete playthrough, so it contains spoilers.

This is a medium-difficulty co-op map. You don’t need extreme precision or timing, but it can nonetheless be a challenge to get both players out of the chamber. I won’t say more — it would spoil the surprise.

7. The Unknown

The above video is safe to watch — it’s a trailer.

In this map, you awake in a pile of broken glass, with a pounding headache and no memory of how you got there. Your goal is to find your portal gun and escape from the building.

8. Cassata Chamber

Here is a map with challenging puzzles that will keep you thinking.

Fun fact: Cassata is a type of Sicilian cake. Hidden joke?

9. The halls of Menoetius

The video above is a playthrough, but you should watch the first couple minutes just to get a firm grasp of how much of a mindf*** this co-op map is.

This unique map is one very small and self-contained puzzle that involves no use of portal guns at all. To solve the puzzle, you need teamwork and brain power.

Once you know what to do, the chamber can be solved in a couple minutes, but I can guarantee it’ll take you much longer than that to puzzle your way through it.

10. Old Faithful

From the mapper who created Sphere of Roundness, this map focuses on a single gameplay element, rather than making use every feature available like its predecessor. It also follows the loose premise of “What if aperture had tested faith plates in the 1950s?”

Nice heads up of some early mods but I have to point out ‘Colours’ is the correct English language spelling of the word not the British way. ‘Colors’ is the American/wrong way of spelling it! Deal with it! Americans also call the species of Goose known as the Brent as a Brant. Freaks!!!!! :)

On July 10, 2011 at 10:41 am

In Spanish, the word is ‘Colores’ and in French, it is ‘couleurs’. So all of these languages are wrong and the one universal spelling is how the British spell it?

No, sir, you are wrong. The United States declared itself independent from you and throughout the course of the years, we have developed a dialect of the English language slightly different from Oxford English or British English. It doesn’t mean that you are wrong or that we are wrong – they’re just different.

Colours is no more correct than colors, but you have done a fine job of displaying the stereotypical British arrogance, sir. Well played.

KevLFC pointed out that he was referring to the word being the correct “English language spelling”. You didn’t really pay attention or understand what he was saying and just blundered on anyway to make your point while also insulting an entire nation. You have done a fine job of displaying the stereotypical American ignorance/arrogance.

And for the record I’m Canadian, so now we have a Brit, a Yankee and a Canuck all acting like jackasses. I hope someone comes along and points out how I’m being a stereotypical Canadian in some manner.

Keeping On Topic

Nice job commenting on the topic there. As a real brit, I will man up to the challenge of keeping on topic. Nice mods shown, I only got portal 2 recently on sale, good to see some strong mods up so quickly, I will definitely give them a go sometime.

How do you use the maps once downloaded?

On August 3, 2011 at 12:08 am

Humans, using global regions to class and separate themselves. LOL.

On August 9, 2011 at 7:56 am

For the record I’m American and I always thought it was colours. It’s probably a dialect thing, we speak the same language but use different words and spellings like airplane and aeroplane. Anyways that Menoetius map looks mind blowing I’m thinking I might redownload the hammer sdk and try map making for a portal again with all these new gameplay elements it’s hard to resist. And on a side note why does the spell check say gameplay is spelled wrong?

On August 21, 2011 at 9:50 am

Language and spelling certainly does evolve over the years – so “colors” is the new right way to spell it.

However, if the author says it’s “Colours” then that is its name, no question.

We (Americans) pronounce it “kull-er-z”.

Hopefully one day the entire world will spell phonetically, so there’s no mix-up with pronunciations. That day is thousands of years away, yet.

On September 20, 2011 at 12:09 am

@Jay No? That is not the “right” way to spell it. That is the American English way of spelling it.

You’re still missing the point the original poster made, so I’ll make this nice and simple for your special little brain: “colours” is the correct English way to spell it, “colors” is the correct *American* English way to spell it.

Can’t understand how that was so difficult to process for you…

Jambalaya Bob

On October 22, 2011 at 11:41 am Good list, btw. Now I just need to wait til Christmas so one of my cheap ass friends can buy Portal 2 for 15 bucks so I can play the ridiculous amount of co-op maps that are currently congesting the Portal 2 modding community.

On October 22, 2011 at 11:44 am Sorry for the double post, but I thought I’d add this one to shut you idiots up a bit more permanently.

On November 1, 2011 at 4:51 am

you tools make me want to spell it kuhlerz for the rest of my life just to spite you.

On November 4, 2011 at 5:04 am

The British only spell colors with a “u” due to French influence. Americans said ‘screw the French, we’re dropping the “u”‘, while the British continue to kowtow to them.

Latin Owns

Read it and weep.

On January 6, 2012 at 7:52 am

I think it’s HILARIOUS how people are taking that colours thing as a slight at American spelling.

He didn’t say it was the correct spelling, he said it was the British spelling. Two completely different things.

The reason it’s pointed out is that so many websites defer to the American English for articles due to the vast majority of online readership being American.

Get. Over. Yourselves.

On March 20, 2012 at 2:47 pm

XD a selection of awesome mods and maps, and you guysare arguing about how to spell “colors” or “colours” or “colores” or 颜色or couleurs or kleure or kulay. PEOPLE SPELL DIFFERENT THINGS DIFFERENTLY!!! GET OVER IT!

On April 13, 2013 at 1:30 pm

It is NOT the British spelling, in wales we spell it ‘lliw’. Is our language not British?
I am absolutely disgusted and insulted. My nose is bleeding I’m so angry.

On August 7, 2013 at 5:57 am

Thats not mods it’s maps, misleading title !

On August 15, 2013 at 11:04 am

But it is England’s language but people have used it because they can’t make their own. Imagine America and Canada with different languages. If I say I’m English does that mean I’m British or Other? And I am British.

On August 20, 2013 at 1:05 pm

People the effing point is ITS A MOD LET HIM SPELL IT THE WAY HE WANTS AND GET ON WITH YOU LIVES! MY GOD PEOPLE IT ISN’T IMPORTANT! And for the record, nothing is right or wrong unless we so make it. So therefore, it is neither right or wrong. CASE CLOSED

On June 29, 2014 at 12:20 am

My god. NONE of these are mods. Can’t you see in most of their names, they’re MAPS? AKA just custom test chambers!
A MOD is Thinking With Time Machine, for example.
I don’t think I’ve facepalmed harder. So stupidly pathetic.
