Tribes Universe Is Probably Dead
PC Powerplay has an in depth look at Tribes: Ascend that includes a lengthy Q&A with Hi-Rez Studios CEO Todd Harris that contains some pretty startling news for Tribes fans. If you’re still looking forward to playing Tribes Universe (the Tribes-based MMOS first announced back in October, 2010), keep looking. Tribes Universe isn’t happening any time soon.
Q: Did Tribes Universe evolve into Ascend, or is that a project you want to revisit in the future?
Our studio is a huge fan of the previous Tribes games. So after we acquired the rights to Tribes our first goal was to get the movement and physics and combat feeling right. When we made enough progress toward that goal we decided to release a pure match-based shooter ahead of any MMO and that shooter became Ascend. We do still intend to further explore the Tribes and Starsiege IP with future projects, but right now our Tribes dev team is working only on Ascend.
If I were a betting man, I’d wager that Tribes Universe doesn’t happen. Announced in October, 2010, it had been in development for months when it was unceremoniously put on hold when Tribes: Ascend was announced last March. And it’s already been 7 years since the last Tribes universe-set game. My guess is that they crunched the numbers and didn’t see an audience for a Tribes MMO, so they’re letting the thing quietly die while they focus elsewhere.
What do you think? Sadface? Don’t care? Let us know in comments.
Tribes: Ascend is due sometime in the first quarter of 2012, so, by April.
