Ubisoft Adding 500 Jobs By 2020, Focusing On Motion Capture
Ubisoft is doubling down on motion capture technology, which means more money, more jobs, and (presumably) more games.
Detailed in a press release from earlier today, Ubisoft is focusing on “…the concentration of American operations for online games and [on] infrastructures for its global network in Montreal.” The new strategy means Ubisoft will be investing $373 million dollars in its Montreal, Quebec-based teams. The money will be spread out over the next seven years, and is expected to generate 500 jobs. By the end of 2020, Ubisoft says it should be employing around 3.500 people in Quebec alone.
The investment comes after a freshly penned agreement with the Quebec government. Along with a $9.9 million cash contribution to Ubisoft, the feds are also adjusting the Tax Credit for Multimedia Titles. I’m not some fancy, big-city accountant [snaps suspenders], but it sounds like Ubisoft is getting a sizable tax break by doing business in Quebec.
The Ubisoft studios in Quebec — Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Montreal — have worked on some of the publisher’s marquee franchises, including Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed. Montreal also has a hand in Watch Dogs, Child of Light, and Rainbow 6: Patriots.

Today, Ubisoft is announcing the concentration of American operations for online games and of infrastructures for its global network in Montreal. In addition, the company will be investing in the expansion of its motion capture technologies expertise. This important technological and operational consolidation represents a total investment of 373 M$ over 7 years, and is expected to generate 500 new jobs in Quebec over the same period. By 2020, Ubisoft should provide employment for more than 3,500 professionals within its Quebec studios.

The 500 new jobs cover a wide range of new skills essential to the development, the production, and the operations of a new generation of video games. To the industry’s “traditional” trades, new profiles come into play, including community and network
management specialists, business intelligence analysts, mathematicians, telemetry experts, systems operators, and monetization and interactive marketing specialists.
This important project is made possible owing to the Quebec Government’s vision and support, which has announced a non-refundable 9.9 M$ financial contribution and adjustments to the Tax Credit for Multimedia Titles, giving eligibility to new trades now essential to operating this new generation of experiences.
