Ubisoft All Aboard the Free-to-Play Train

During an investor conference call last week, Ubisoft revealed the profitability of adopting a free-to-play business model. Microtransactions allow players to spend more on a game than a typical retail price, the company said.

Stéphanie Perotti, Ubisoft’s worldwide director of online services, said:

“Free-to-play is a very flexible business model. The player has the capability to spend more than in a traditional model.

“The Settlers Online is set to make more money in four years than the Settlers brand did on PC over nine years.”

When asked directly about free-to-play on next-gen consoles, Ubisoft’s chief financial officer Alain Martinez said:

“There will be free-to-play on consoles. But in the future, with games like Watch Dogs, we could see more opportunity for $60 games to learn from the free-to-play model. The next generation will offer more and more item-based content. This will benefit our games’ profitability.”

Ubisoft expects to make between double and triple the amount of money from its free-to-play and casual games in fiscal 2013 than in 2012.

If its done right, this could easily boost sales for them. However, since this is Ubisoft, there is a distinct possibility that they’ll take the greed angle. In which case, most players will see right through that and the games will suffer because of it.

I just want to go back to the days where I only had to pay once for a game instead of purchasing it in increments. Do you remember those days? The days when you could walk into a game store, buy a cartridge or a disk, and say “I just bought a completed product, everything the developers intended to give to me is right here”? Sure there was no way to patch the game, but that just meant the developers were extra careful and felt like they had more responsibility. Then, if they felt like they hadn’t put everything into the game that they wanted, they would just implement those ideas into this crazy thing called a “sequel”, which would also be a complete product! I miss those days so much…

T Wal. I have to agree with on a lot. What i miss though was the dominance of single player games. Oh how i miss games not having mandatory multiplayer components. As for free to play, well it could easily boost sales. Though with their current rep, and the fact that said game will probably use Ubisoft’s Uplay, I really don’t have much interest in it.

Its pointless. Especially since with new console cycles there no backwards compatibility to transfer all the stuff you bought to the new console. Its a complete waste of money. This business model is not worth it on the console market.
