Ubisoft Drops Uplay Passport from Future Games, Free for AC4:BF

In response to player feedback, Ubisoft has decided to drop Uplay Passport from all future games. Further, the service will now be free of charge for second-hand owners of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

In a blog post, Ubisoft announced:

“…we have decided to eliminate the cost of the Uplay Passport for Black Flag,” and “Uplay Passport will not be a part of any future Ubisoft games.”

While every new copy of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag includes the Uplay Passport code, second-hand owners would have needed to purchase a code separately before Ubisoft made this announcement. Uplay Passport gives players access to “Edward’s Fleet,” an online feature that allows a single player to interact with multiple players on consoles or via the game’s companion app.

Ubisoft explains why it made this decision:

“The Uplay Passport program was initiated as a means of giving customers full access and support for online multiplayer and features, along with exclusive content, bonuses and rewards. However, games today are blurring the line between offline and online, between what is “single player” and what is “multiplayer.” Based on that and on the feedback we received from you, we recognized that Passport is no longer the best approach for ensuring that all our customers have the best possible experience with all facets of our games.”

That sounds like a lot of PR spin to say, “We realize that the only way to garner good will with gamers is to drop this DRM scheme.”

I will agree with what Ubisoft said about how single player is being merged with multiplayer, though I think I’d use the term “invaded” instead of “blurring.” But I’d disagree that the system was ever done to “give” the customers anything, but rather to get a piece of the used market pie.

I don’t mind the “blurring” of singleplayer and multiplayer. I, however, DO have a problem with what they want to do with Watch Dogs. I don’t want to be playing a singleplayer game only to have an unknown and unwanted invasion of my singleplayer game by another player.
