Ubisoft May Add Third-Party Games to UPlay

Steam is a big deal. Origin is a thing now. And now Ubisoft has an game distribution portal in its UPlay service, which it may try to expand to games that aren’t published by Ubisoft.

Currently, Ubisoft’s online PC game distribution portal only includes the publisher’s own titles, but with the portal getting an overhaul, Ubisoft hopes to change that. The new version of UPlay may well carry other publishers’ titles, the same way that Steam does.

Speaking with MCV, Ubisoft’s Stephanie Perotti said Ubisoft was starting with its own titles, but was open to further expansion.

“We remain open to opportunities,” she said during Ubisoft’s Digital Days showcase last week in Paris.

“Right now, we’re starting the service with our own games, but as we go forward, we plan to potentially add other titles.”

UPlay started its life as an achievement-tracking service through which players could gain points while playing games, and potentially unlock additional content in titles such as Splinter Cell: Conviction and Assassin’s Creed 2. Recently, however, it’s become a full-blowing digital distribution app, through which players can purchase and download titles. In that way, it’s a whole lot like Electronic Arts’ Origin portal.

But Perotti said Ubisoft intends for UPlay to be more than just a means to sell players its games.

“The plan for UPlay goes beyond digital distribution,” she said. “We continue to evolve the service across all platforms, including PC, console and mobile. The more Ubisoft games you play, the more rewards you can get, as well as several online services that players would expect.”

Let’s put it to you guys: What (realistic) stuff would you like to see Ubisoft provide that would make you want to use its service? Hit us up in the comments.
