uPlay Crashes Under Stampede of Watch_Dogs (UPDATE)

Update 2, 2 p.m. PDT: Ubisoft has noted on Twitter that it’s aware of players’ uPlay login issues:

It seems there’s at least some intermittent service, as I’ve been able to log back in to uPlay, but other players are still reporting they can’t. We’ll keep an eye out for any further developments and update here.

Update 1, 1:35 p.m. PDT: uPlay seems to be up and running, at least on PC. If you’re still having issues, let us know in the comments.

Original story:

It seems a great many people are very excited to play Ubisoft’s open world game Watch_Dogs today, so much so that the publisher’s online portal has buckled from all that crazy hacking.

As reported by Play.tm, forum users for both the PC and console versions of uPlay, Ubisoft’s online digital download portal and digital rights management software, are saying the service is down altogether. We at GameFront are also experiencing an outage in the service, with it crashing every time we try to log in to the PC portal.

Surely that’s a bummer to players who have been waiting to grab Watch_Dogs, which became available at midnight last night. It’s about 30 GB to download the whole game, and requires an Internet connection for optimal play, which allows players to invade one another’s games as rival hackers.

GameFront has reached out to Ubisoft for more information about the outage and when players can expect uPlay to go back up, and well update as the situation develops.

I already expected this to happen, it always does with highly anticipated games that have a worldwide release, I hope uplay is back up soon.

I still cant log back into Uplay and my game wasn’t able to finish downloading at this point I’m quite upset that Uplay didn’t foresee this coming and prep for it better.

Who would have thought, that uPlay would go down – again?! They could at least have looked at the pre-sale numbers and spun up a few more nodes in their infrastructure or bought better connectivity, if that’s the issue. But then, it IS Ubisoft, those with this awful uPlay, that just keeps people from playing the games they’ve bought. So it was to be expected.

Lessons to learn from this: never, ever buy a Ubisoft game again, until they learn, that maybe Steam is enough (and works as well! I wonder how Valve is managing that; admittedly they had a rough start back in the days of HL2, but that was at a time when most people used 56k modems to connect to the internet and computing power was way more expensive).
