Fragment Media has arranged to motion capture a UK Mayor born with major upper limb deficiencies for an unspecified video game project. According to British tabloid News of the World, Crediton Mayor Frank Letch was discovered by the Newcastle development studio at a disability exhibition.
Letch was born without arms, but has risen above his disability having learned to use his feet to drive, write and use tools such as a potato peeler. His CGI image will be used as a template for an animated character.
He said: ”They’ll kit me out with special leggings fitted with electronic tags and then film me doing various things.
”This allows them to translate my movements and so create an animated character.”
He was approached by Fragment Media, based in Newcastle, after its director Simon McKeown spotted him at a disability exhibition.
Frank said: ”He wanted to see what I could do with my feet, so I showed him how I can use my toes to write. That’s when he asked to film me.”
It will interesting to see whether Fragment’s project is geared towards entertainment or edutainment. Whatever the project it’s destined for, hopefully Mayor Letch’s contribution will raise awareness of people facing disabilities. He’s obviously an example of a man who has persevered.
