Unreal Engine 4 Slated for 2012

Mike Capps, president of Epic Games, revealed Unreal Engine 4 will coincide with the next generation of consoles expected sometime between 2012 and 2018. The next iteration of the Unreal Engine is decidedly console focused.

“We’ve got Unreal [Engine] 4 in production right now… it’s going to be in the next console generation – our rough guess is 2012 [to] 2018.”

Capps statement confirms what Epic’s technical mastermind Tim Sweeney told TGDaily in a March interview:

“Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft’s successor for the Xbox 360, Sony’s successor for the Playstation 3 – and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also. PCs will follow after that.”

Whats the point in doing the pc last, its easier to get all the bugs out of the way first on the pc besides the engine is produced on pcs

Consoles are where the money is at, so they’re focusing on that. Epic pretty much gave the finger to the community that started them up, so honestly I could care less about the next Unreal Engine or any game made by Epic anyway. Their console games have been less than thrilling and UT3 feels more like a console port thanks to the clumsy menu, gamespyID crap, texture popping and streaming, and a few other things. The last good PC game Epic had was UT2004. UT2003 wasn’t that great, and before that it was UT. Unreal 2 (not Tournament, just Unreal) was a rather bland game as well, so they’ve proven that they can’t really make a good SP game.

In my eyes Epic is pretty close to a 1 hit wonder with their games (Unreal, UT, UT2004) while their engine used to be pretty good (worked well for both PC and console), but now they’re engine seems to be more console oriented.

Serious let down to PC gamers. Epic should think why their engines were so successful in the first place. But then again it does leave room for maybe a new company to come in and take over. Valve will probably answer it I imagine. If they can get off all the cool things their current engine can do, they just need updated visuals really.

All these PC company’s that started these franchises off on the PC and now give absolutely no respect to them is a bit ridiculous. The battlefield series? The unreal series? Far Cry? Call Of Duty? All these games wouldn’t be what they are without PC support.

Strange too, that successful PC games always get ported for years onto consoles and tons of remakes are made for consoles, yet original titles never thrive on a console. The PC market is what raises original games that are then proven popular enough to be ported.

Anyone wanna explain to me as well why all games are getting dumbed down? In 02 EA released a game FPS where you could drive aircraft carriers, submarines, battleships, destroyers, P-51 mustangs, B-17s, and was a good FPS to boot with 32 players per side. Ever since Battlefield 1942 the series has been goin downhill.

I think the problem is that console gamers never played these games so they don’t know what they are missing really.

This is Epics way of thumbing their noses at the PC gamers. They’re just cranky that piracy was so rampant on UT3…Friggen babies. Cry more Epic!

Pirate and Chinchilla are 100% right. The big gaming companies like DICE and Infinity Ward have been dumbing down games for a couple years now. Another good example would be the Medal of Honor series, Just take a look at what happened to those!

These game developers and publishers are idiots a lot of the time. Before WoW, everyone would have laughed at the MMO market and hence shot themselves in the foot by dissing it. Now their “informed, profit-motivated” opinions look like decidedly stupid, pessimistic and self-defeating

Okay, first I think that Epic is really doing something incredibly stupid by making a statement as obnoxious and arrogant as that.

UT3 had 1 positive about it. It has the best game play so far in the series for vehicle and on foot. However the fact that they sold out UT’s style to Gears, and how UT has now been invaded by Big McLargeHuge men who are nothing like the image UT99 once created is appalling. The fact that they made so many promises for UT3 like Conquest mode, and an SP mode where factions would change allegiances constantly were just stupid too. They never followed through with any of it because they were riding high on the success that Gears had given them. They launched UT3 too early and too unfinished to actually garner the reviews a normal UT launch should. With UT03, even though they subtracted so much content like Assault and a lot of the maps, Epic still added in Bombing Run and released Bonus Packs which were desperately needed to extend the lifespan. Which with the coming of UT04 they brought back a ton of their content, as well as their already stellar post product support. UT3 is a huge exception to all of these rules. They didn’t add anything new (Warfare = Improved Onslaught). Epic essentially released another UT03 but without any new content at all, hoping the new engine and graphics would make people happy I would assume. So far their post product support isn’t looking too great either. Especially with how they are treating the next engine as well. I only hope that Epic will start listening to their original and truest fan base and see that they can make just as many sales with the next UT game as Gears, as long as they actually release something that will live up to the series legacy. And not another UT3.5 or worse, UT Gears Of War.

UT99 = Best Style, Interface (Bring back UWindows Please)
UT04 = Best Amount of Content,
UT3 = Best Gameplay,

I think that if Epic can combine those 3(4) elements, then the next one will be the best so far. However I can only dream.

ut3 is okay but it would have done better if it came out before any other game that uses its engine, thus it looks and feels like a cheap port, i agree with nick a bit but i feel that the single player campaign was crap mainly due to the fact it was lust tutorial missions againsts bots and repeated itself.

UT99 Best Game evermade for it’s time(still has a bigger comunity then ut3)Purchased a second copy for my dreamcast becuase the disk started to warp from being played 12 hours a day.Got into pc gameing because of UT99.

UT2004 = Geat Game, still playing and will still be playing till a new better shooter game is released.

UT3.. Got PC ver. i was happy.. i installed, still happy…. but then it happend my ut skills gone down the drian, due to not haveing to aim for some guns(Nubtube flak)Is this due to replaceing a mouse with an analog stick…. i think so.
I really could go on stateing how they messed up on this game but im not here to rant about the game.I got the PS3 UT3 thinking it might be better playing a game that was made for analog sticks with analog sticks and was a i wrong.. The dodgeing system destoyed this game for console, dodge forward? what is that?…

Yeah… so getting back to the point.
Your gonna make another big mistake releaseing the new game on console because analog to mouse does not work,Mouse to controler works.

EPIC listen to your PC fans! if you have any left.. Otherwise your gonna push them the wrong way witch you already have. New ut game in 2012 To me this means nothing anymore. Your killing your franchise by releaseing a crapy game and banning, ignoreing people in the comunity. Keep it up and you might as well not evin release it on pc platform.

 unreal tournament 2004 is byfar my fav UT game ive played the new UT3 and that was a huge failure they made the game not fun by adding more realism the biggest disappointment in my book is the gravity UT04 had the floating the wall dodging the more unrealistic the game was for movement made it the most fun. UT3 just made it realistic to life. The unreal tournament community will look forward to UT4 if it kept the concepts of 04 and brought more intense higher graphics maybe some new game types and diff weapons.
