Upcoming Dark Souls 2 Patch Nerfs Lightning Spears Even Further

In preparation for the upcoming Dark Souls 2 DLC, Crown of the Old Iron King, From Software will be dropping another calibrations patch that seems especially focused on nerfing magic users, especially those with faith builds.

Calibration 1.10, which drops on August 25, will reduce the damage of 15 spells including, Lightning Spear, Great Lightning Spear, Sunlight Spear, Emit Force, Soul Geyser, Soul Shower, Soul Spear and Crystal Soul Spear just to name a few of the big ones.

This patch especially hurts faith-based characters who were already slapped silly with the nerf stick back in patch 1.08 when From Software reduced the number of casts of lightning spear from 11 down to three, among other nerfs aimed specifically at offensive miracles. Though, to be fair, Lightning Spears were pretty overpowered pre-patch, and now the pendulum seems to have swung back entirely in the other direction.

Below you can find the full patch notes from Beyond the Bonfire. Be sure to check out our own James Heaney’s Dark Souls 2 walkthrough as well and see how this patch affects his faith-based character as he gets closer and closer to beating the game.

The following fixes, changes, and refinements are included in the update:

Someone on DKSII subreddit retranslated the patch notes directly from japanese, and it turns out only the POISE damage is lowered.

The official english translations have an established history of translation errors.

It’s actually hilarious just how steep the Lightning Spear nerfs were back in patch 1.08. Lightning Spears were never seriously competitive in the games PVP. Sure, they pack a punch, but you have tons of time to dodge or interrupt their casting of it. The only good reason for nerfing them seems to be for PVE and even then, these nerfs are incredibly steep just for that. Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to throw pyromancies on my PVE sun bro since miracles aren’t worth it anymore.

As for 1.10, if it’s just poise damage then that isn’t that bad. Still, nerfing stuff such as lightning spears into the ground defeats the purpose of them even being in the game. I’m really not sure what From is thinking with some of these balance changes.

And… I’m done with Dark Souls. With 2 patches they have turned my FAVORITE character from a faith based god to a squishy wimp who flashes some sparks. At least there are Soul Vessels (rolls eyes). Can someone explain to me the rationalization? It definitely couldn’t have been complaints by the PvP community as spears are still easily dodged. Has A I evolved to a level that NPCs are filing complaints? Were the spears a little OP? Maybe. A little. Now it’s practically useless to create a ranged faith character. Thanks FromSoft. At least we still have Bloodborne coming out soon on all platforms. Oh wait…

Very stupid idea nerfing the lighting spears AGAIN.
Generally, spell casting characters are becoming useless in PvP.
Very, very bad.

After some testing, it looks like the Lightning Spear family actually got a 25% damage increase in the 1.10 patch.

Damage to poise is likely decreased (as stated in the version notes).

I just don’t understand any of this. Why must From accommodate the needs of ty pvp players by nerfing everything. They won’t fix problems that actually need fixing by they’ll patch things every time someone complains about something being too OP. Lets face it, those people suck as people and gamers. We need to remember that the DS series is NOT a user friendly game; YOU WILL DIE!!

I just picked up the black witch robe and started upgrading that, now it’s going to be ing useless. Oh, and now the defense of my gyrm helms are getting lowered?! WTF?! This game is difficult enough. Does From have to kick us in the nuts every chance they get?

@Giant Dad

Makes sense. 1.08 accidentally nerfed Lightning Spear damage by 25% from what I’ve heard. It was supposed to be a buff since they were dropping the uses on all of them but they somehow managed to input it as a drop instead. This was the big reason why I was more inclined to believe that this nerf was for Poise damage. Still, i’m not sure how much this actually helps faith users, given that the uses are still amazingly terrible.

Nerf souls guys that’s all this game is because ppl cry to them on the forms and suck from softs. C0ck. It’s dumb because demon souls was the best game and it was never nerfed. HMMMM.

@Giant Dad

Hopefully you mean a 25% increase on the 1.08 levels? Else they’d only be at around 93% of the original damage which would still be a nerf.
