Update on Xbox 360's "Falcon" Project

falcon1-1.jpgAwhile back, William covered some of the various speculation surrounding Microsoft’s project, code named “Falcon.” Falcon is essentially a new board for the Xbox 360 that holds a 65-nanometer chip, as opposed to the 90-nanometer chips of the older models. What this means for consumers is a theoretically more reliable chipset that produces less heat, which has been known to cause many systems to fail. Besides that, the new boards are only slated to appear in models with an HDMI port.

Unfortunately, Microsoft has kept fairly quiet on the project — most likely to avoid bringing more attention to the “Red Ring of Death” debacle — so there’s really no way of knowing exactly when the new chipsets will arrive in stores or how to tell if the box in your hands has one. Apparently 360s with the new 65-nm boards should on their way from China as we speak, but won’t really start to dominate store shelves until the older models have all been sold. Bottom line: if you’re in the market for a Xbox 360, you might want to wait a month or two to make sure you get a more reliable system.
