Valve E3 Surprise: Not Episode 3

Half_Life_2_The internet’s been all abuzz all weekend over the rumor that Valve could be announcing Half-Life 2 Episode 3 at E3. There was speculation fueled by an image depicting the lambda sign along with the word “Freeman,” and there was even in-depth examination of a Team Fortress 2 image that appeared to have a lambda sign hidden in a popped vein on a character’s bicep.

Well, it looks like all that unfounded speculation was just that: unfounded. According to fansite Halflife2.net, Gabe Newell has confirmed to them via email (which you can see here that the “Freeman 14th” image is in fact a fake.

Of course, this won’t stop the speculation or the rumors. I’m sure that someone on a forum somewhere right now is pointing out that Gabe called the image fake, but didn’t say that Episode 3 is not being announced. Here’s a message to that guy: STOP IT. This year’s E3 rumor mongering is setting a new record for annoying.

We’ll find out next week what the surprise is. It could in fact be Episode 3. It could also be something completely unrelated to Half-Life. No matter what it is, you can be sure of two things. It will be good, and it will sell like hotcakes, just like everything else Valve touches.

It better be Episode 3. I’m tired of hearing about ing Portal and Left 4 Dead all the time. Half-Life is more important.

Last year’s E3 was rather dry (internet feed) and it appeared to be well put together but not very much of interest shown. I’m assuming this year there will be even less interesting games.

On the other hand, iD Software was putting out some neat stuff. Rage should be great but Wolfenstein was kind of disappointing. It is an alright game but somehow it didn’t catch my attention. I’m waiting for Rage and hoping that iD will put something together that is a Halo killer (not that Halo is better than PC fps anyway but they need to do something groundbreaking)

If not Episode 3, then what about Half-Life 3?
