Valve: Expect Three Announcements Next Week

Don’t you just love it when a company announces an announcement?

Valve Software, a Bellevue, Washington-based video game company with a penchant for free hats and large exploding men, will have quite the interesting week. Starting on Monday at 10AM PT, Valve will take the wraps off of three (Three? Three announcements, divided by one week, means HALF-LIFE 3!) new products. All we know at the moment is that these announcements are related to Valve’s push into the living room, and its Big Picture Mode Steam interface.

Posted on the Living Room teaser page:

Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads.
This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room.
Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.

The three announcements are represented by three symbols on the Living Room page (seen above). The smart money points to the first announcement being about an operating system or user interface (the circle), and a second announcement about hardware (the brackets around the circle). The third announcement is a bit trickier; some think it’s going to be a game reveal, some sort of killer app (Half-Life 3? Left for Dead 3?), but I think it might be another non-game software announcement. If Valve shows off a purpose-built, Valve-flavored Linux build on Monday, they could follow that up with a new, revamped Big Picture Mode in the third announcement. That seems like little too threadbare, though, so here’s hoping it’s a new game. COME ON, NEW RICOCHET!

Ah, Valve, pushing the PC into the living room where exactly nobody asked for it. I guess their still living in that fantasy world where everyone plays PC shooters with a controller.

I’m going to guess….

1) Steam Box

2) Source Engine 2

3) A Linux announcement

I’d love to hear about Half-Life 2, but I’m fairly certain that particular project will never be seen by public eyes

Steam box will not be very successful. why push hardware like this or even linux when barley any body uses it even steam says that barley any of their uses use it. i think gabe needs to pull the out of his ear and listen to the people around him
