Valve Is Making Source Engine Two

Billionaire Gabe Newell has confirmed that Valve is still not doing anything with Half-Life 3 because they’re too busy, probably swimming around in Gabe Newell’s money. In fairness, he actually did not say anything about Half-Life 3, but that’s because he specifically told everyone not to ask him anything about Half-Life. I choose to interpret this to mean that Gabe Newell would rather hang out in Duckberg with his number one dime than actually get to work on Half-Life 3.

Here’s what happened: A gaggle of members of 4 Chan’s /v/ board visited Valve HQ for the Billionaire’s birthday, and one of them asked him if they’re working on a new version of the Source engine. “We’ve been working on new engine stuff for a while,” Newell said. “We’ve just been waiting for a game to roll it out with.” When asked to if it’s a brand new engine rather than an update for the original, Newell said “Yeah.”

This makes a lot of sense considering how long they’ve been riding the source engine. And it’s even more pleasing to hear that they are designing the Source 2 from the ground up, rather than simply updating the old Source engine like they had been doing.

Since Half Life 3 is so anticipated, it would make more sense to release it on modern technology rather than the original Source engine. And it wouldn’t be too far out of the question for them to build this engine along with HL3, as they did with the original Source engine and HL2.

I do like the “Money Bin” reference as well.

He did talk about HL3. Sort of. He said “Ricochet 2 has started development”, and previously in an interview, he had used “Ricochet 2″ as a codename for HL3.

I made a prediction about 3 years ago we wouldn’t see the next Half-Life game before 2014, and it’s looking to be rather accurate. *pats self on back* I don’t like being snarky, but I was torn a new anus on the Steam forums for making that claim, so I’m anxiously awaiting 2014 to drop back in and say “I told you so! The anal bleeding was completely unnecessary!”
