VGAs 2011: Rainbow 6: Patriots

“This is for the homes your foreclosed on. The bailouts you took.” Ok, Rainbow 6: Patriots, you have my attention. Here’s the trailer from tonight’s VGAs.

I’m not sure what to make of this. It probably won’t surprise those of you familiar with me to find out that I am 100% behind Occupy Wall Street, and very, very disappointed in the state of things. So the idea of a game that seeks to make the frustrations about the global financial system (currently causing uprisings worldwide) front and center, plotwise, is immediately interesting to me. Alas, it looks like it’s going to either use people rightly frustrated by the sickening state of things as the bad guys, or as dupes of bad guys who are using them for, I assume, selfish ends.

Given Tom Clancy’s very famous ultra-right wing views, I’m assuming it’s not going to be a populist appeal, but hopefully, the game is smarter than it looks and isn’t just another shallow cash-in on a serious issue. Either way, it’s kind of interesting the way the economic crisis is affecting gaming culture, and I’m looking forward to seeing if we get more of this in 2012. But what do you think? Let us know in comments.

15 cabs and a bus, how is inflicting harm / terror on those poor working class below going to change things, the very people probably foreclosed on? wtf how patriotic?

Anyway the story is all wrong I’m thinking its would have have been far more likely to find the men responsible, at country clubs an/or golf courses not at the office?

Could be really good – who hasn’t wanted to plug an OCCUPY’er in the last couple of months? He’re to hoping for a high bodycount in this one.

Well I like the terrorists in one way since I hate the banks, but blowing up a bunch of innocents is not the way to go about things, so I don’t think I’ll have a problem with headshotting the f**kers in the game. If the target gameplay was any indication, these are ruthless bastards who need to be killed. They’re also interesting though, and it’s a change from your now-generic middle east muslim terrorists.

I look very forward to this game.

So, arch-conservative Tom Clancy took Occupy slogans and put them in the mouths of people engaging in violent acts most often employed by people on the far right of the political spectrum. Now all of his fanboys can enjoy vicariously murdering people whose political opinions they disagree with since the game comes with a built-in justification for it. I guess having a game where you could just mow down unarmed, unresisting left-wing protestors would have been satisfying but too blindingly obvious and difficult to make excuses for.

Also, Rob, the answer to your question “who hasn’t wanted to plug an OCCUPY’er in the last couple of months?” would be “Anyone who isn’t a cowardly fascist tool who thinks different ideas should be met with bullets”.

I really miss when Russians where the bad guys.
