Visceral Will Take Its Time With Any Dead Space 2 Film Adaptation

Dead Space 2 had a good first week, and you know what that means — the inevitable “we’re going to do a good job” film adaptation discussion.

Ian Milham, the co-creator of Dead Space, told the BBC that there has been a lot of discussion about the possibilities of a Dead Space film, but that it “wouldn’t be rushed.” Here’s what he said during the interview:

We would love to have a live action film and we’ve had a lot of discussion. But one of the reasons Dead Space still exists and is popular is because we’ve made sure to do everything right. So we’re doing the same with the film, not just a cheap cash-in but to do something really worthwhile, so we’ll see.

Of course, the Dead Space story isn’t exactly a  stranger to a film adaptation (of sorts). There are currently two Dead Space-universe animated features — Dead Space: Downfall, a prequel to the first game, and Dead Space: Aftermath, an epilogue to Dead Space 2. You can get both of them on Amazon.com, if you’re so inclined.

There are also a pair of Dead Space story novelizations — both of which exist within the universe without stepping on the toes of the games’ stories — and a graphic novel that was made into a motion comic and released on Xbox Live and the Playstation Network, which concerns even more prequel story separate from Downfall.

So there are ample stories that could be adapted independent of ruining the game by watering it down and twisting it, like every other video game movie ever made. Still, that’s never stopped Hollywood from creating a garbage adaptation before.

I am staunchly non-optimistic.
