Want an Xperia Play? Get Ready to Rebuy Your PSN Games

You might already own some games from the Playstation Network that will appear on the Xperia Play, but don’t expect to be able to play them. According to Sony Ericsson UK Managing Director Nathan Vautier, content you’ve purchased on PSN will have to be purchased again.

Crash Bandicoot is the “legendary” PSX game that will be preloaded onto the phone, which Sony has been holding back from us until this week at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress, and the phone will include a few other games at launch, like Tetris. “[Xperia Play owners] will have to repurchase the games, so it’s not totally integrated,” Vautier said. “I think the exciting thing is that there are games which people are very, very aware of.”

Okay, wait. It’s very exciting that Playstation fans are aware of Playstation games and get to pay Sony twice for them? Not to hate on Sony (since you guys love to claim we’re all Microsoft loving toolbags here), but this just feels so…typical. Painfully so, actually.

It also speaks to the fact that the Playstation phone isn’t necessarily for Playstation fans — or at least, the company’s not doing anything to endear itself to us Playstation owners. Phone buyers who don’t have PSN accounts aren’t going to care about this development as they buy content from the Playstation Suite for the first time when it comes out later this year.

I don’t know, is it just me who’s annoyed that Sony keeps taking away my ability to play games I already own? I’m still really, really bitter about PS3 backwards compatibility, and this doesn’t necessarily make me hopeful for a lot of support from Sony when the NGP rolls out, either.

I think sony enjoys digging it’s own grave.

They also did the same thing when they released Move. Instead of releasing a patch to add move support you’d have to buy the game again.

OK just got my Xperia have been a playstation guy since PS1. It is the only thing I’ve had since the original Nintindo and the Atari before that so I had to get it. All you have to do is call the customer service number and they will credit your PSN account for your PSP games and your good to go. Hey I hate the big evil corporation as much as the next guy, but really? Give them some benefit of the doubt.

Not surprised Skippy was cut. His weak kickoffs were tolerable as long as he was accurate on fg attempts. Whatever happened to Vanderjack, by the way? Not sure Suisam is the answer…Heinz a super tough venue. We’ll see. Why is Wm. still on team? It seems like he can’t get beat enough.
