Wargaming Entering the Console Business

Free-to-play titan Wargming has announced its acquisition of Chicago-based Day 1 Studios for $20 million. Following the acquisition, the newly formed studio will focus exclusively on the development of an unannounced console title.

When I spoke with Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi at E3 2012, he expressed his belief that free-to-play is the future for all gaming, not just PC gaming; I’m interested to see his approach to F2P in the console market.

If you haven’t heard of Day 1, that’s the studio that worked with Monolith Productions to make the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 console ports of F.E.A.R. In 2010, Warner Bros. announced that they would be developing F.E.A.R. 3, but in the post-release fallout, the company laid off more than 95% of its employees. For $20M, it seems like Wargaming has great faith in its ability to rebuilt Day 1 and see it to success.
