Warhammer 40K: Space Marine — Dev Diary
THQ has released a developer diary for its upcoming title, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, slated for launch in August 2011.
Game Director Raphael van Lierop, Relic Studio GM Jonathan Dowdeswell, Campaign Lead Matthew Berger, Producer Andy Lang, and James McDermott of Studio Marketing provide insight about the original chainsaw-wielding supersoldier and the world he inhabits.
We really have taken the (Warhammer 40k) IP to heart, and we don’t want to sell short any of the action and violence.
You’re sent down to an industrialized planet designed to manufacture weapons of war. The orcs are there to get their hands on the warlord-class Titan–a gargantuan beast of metal bristling with weapons that can level whole cities.
Space Marine has such an interesting, compelling setting–the architecture, with the sort of futuristic gothic feeling, the epic scale of everything–everything is immense; everything is larger than life. There’s a sort of beauty in the world–there’s also so much darkness, death and destruction. And those contrasts create such an interesting canvas to paint on.
It’s not just a simple story about an orc invasion; there’s much more depth going on, there are twists and turns in the story, there are betrayals. The action is amazingly intense. Anybody who likes science fiction or any kind of blockbuster entertainment is going to love space marine.
Now that’s how you hype a game.
