Wasteland 2 Raises $3M; InXile Boss Sees No “End in Sight” for Kickstarter

The Wasteland 2 Kickstarter has come to a close with $2,933,147 raised, and additional PayPal donations bringing the grand total to $3,039,923. Given developer inXile’s initial goal was $900,000, to call more than tripling that amount a success is an understatement.

A staggering 1200 backers pledged between $250 and $499, and over 350 people pledged between $500 and $10,000 or more, which is a testament to the love fans have for Wasteland and the faith they have in inXile to bring this long-awaited sequel.

Kickstarter will be getting some of those donations back, as inXile pledged to return 5% of the profits to the community, which amounts to approximately $150,000.

Speaking to VG247 , inXile boss Brian Fargo explained that he sees no end to this Kickstarter era, though projects may see diminishing returns.

Fargo said:

“I don’t see an end in sight for companies raising money with Kickstarter, but most will not be in the million dollar range.

“Shadowrun passed their goal of $400K and Leisure Suit Larry is well towards its minimum amount of $500K. Even the smaller projects with new developers will be tomorrow’s one million dollar projects. Trust me, there will be some new group that comes along one day and blows me and Tim [Schafer] out of the water with their success.

“And I do believe that if we get enough companies to pledge putting a small percentage of their profits back into the community, it will keep the ecosystem alive. Kickstarter is such a wonderful way to get financed that it just makes sense to give back.”

Kickstarter has helped resurrect some beloved franchises and genres, but is the community being over-saturated with Kickstarter projects?
