[UPDATED] Watch Dogs Delayed to 2014
UPDATE: Amazon and GameStop have both announced PS4 bundle changes in light of the Watch Dogs delay.
Amazon will still ship a PS4 to those who pre-ordered a Watch Dogs bundle, and the originally-listed “estimated ship date” for that customer should not change.
Similarly, GameStop told Polygon that it’s offering those who pre-ordered a Watch Dogs PS4 bundle two options: Customers can receive a vanilla PS4 bundle at launch, and will receive Watch Dogs when the game is released in Q1 2014, or they can select another PS4 launch bundle instead.
Hacking future Chicago will have to wait. Ubisoft just announced that one of our most anticipated games of 2013, Watch Dogs, has been delayed until Spring 2014.
In a post on the UbiBlog, the dev team said the difficult decision to bump Watch Dogs from its originally planned November launch was made to ensure a “truly memorable and exceptional experience.”
“Our ambition from the start with Watch Dogs has been to deliver something that embodies what we wanted to see in the next-generation of gaming,” Ubisoft said in a statement. “It is with this in mind that we’ve made the tough decision to delay the release until spring 2014.”
“We know a lot of you are probably wondering: Why now? We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune each detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.”
A Watch Dogs movie is already in the planning stages and Ubisoft has gone so far as to label Watch Dogs a full-blown franchise, so it’s clear the publisher has high hopes for this one, and releasing an unpolished game would have been a disaster. Hopefully those four to six months of additional development time will be put to good use.
