West and Zampella Discuss Activsion Lawsuit Details in Interview

If you’re looking to get up to speed on the high-profile lawsuit filed against Activision by Infinity Ward founders Jason West and Vince Zampella, this interview with Game Informer is a good place to start. Though it obviously only presents one side of the story (West’s, Zampella’s, and their lawyer’s), the piece is chock full of salacious information, including cloak-and-dagger attempts by Activision to hack into Infinity Ward’s e-mail servers and even compromise the plaintiff’s computers by setting off a fake fire drill at the company’s HQ.

Activision, as you might imagine, comes off looking very greedy and evil — as described in the interview, its plan was to coerce West and Zampella into making Modern Warfare 3 by withholding payment due to them from Modern Warfare 2. When that didn’t work, they conspired to get the pair fired, rather than pay them that money. No doubt the company will use the ongoing court case to make its own counter-claims.

The whole affair is a fascinating window into the legal complexities and the huge sums of money that define video game business at its very highest echelon. Those interested in additional information can check out internal e-mails and other official documents published by the L.A. Times after they were unsealed by the court.
