What is SOMA? Frictional Teases Mystery Project

Frictional Games, the folks who enjoy making videogames that scare the hell out of people, are up to something. And I’m not sure I want to find out what SOMA is.

For now, it’s a teaser site with cyberpunk style and a “case file” called Vivarium. A vivarium is an enclosed area used to observe plant or animal life and conduct research, but in this particular case, it appears the life form takes on mechanical form. And who is actually doing the observing is definitely up for debate. See what I mean in this slow-boil, five-minute teaser:

Vivarium is just one of eight case files on the site, so it appears we’ll be getting more creepy, atmospheric clips in the near future. For now, the only other thing we have to go on is the name of the site, SOMA. It’s unclear if this is the actual name of Frictional’s game, or just some sort of ARG site related to the game, but one possible clue is the definition of “Soma.” According to ancient Vedic sanskrit, it’s the name of a drink used in Hindu rituals that produced immortality.

Curious, indeed. We’ll keep you posted.
