Whoops: GameStop Accidentally Lists Gears of War Ultimate
Seems like we’re finding out more about upcoming games from botched online listings than from the people actually making them lately.
Microsoft’s planning some kind of Gears of War bundle in the run-up to the release of Gears of War 3, tentatively called Gears of War Ultimate. The guys over at IGN spotted the listing on GameStop.com when it was up there for about two seconds. Whatever Gears of War Ultimate is, it’ll run $29.99 and is supposed to hit shelves on Feb. 15.
Here’s what we definitely know about Ultimate: a Microsoft rep confirmed with IGN that yes, the package is some kind of bundle release of Gears content, but no, it wouldn’t include Gears 3 or the Gears 3 beta that’s packaged along with Bulletstorm.
Fair speculation is that Ultimate is Gears 1 and 2 with all the maps and other downloadable content that’s come out up to now. Add that to the other editions of the Gears games, the Platinum and Game of the Year editions. IGN also notes that we could be seeing Ultimate as some kind of Gears-related Kinect project that’s been rumored for a while now and that they thought was going to be announced at the VGAs. It wasn’t — the announcement was delayed — and Cliffy B of Epic has said there won’t be Kinect in Gears 3; not exactly a denial of whatever Ultimate could be, but not promising.
Therefore: my money’s on Ultimate being a package of games most Xbox players already own, with the content they’ve already paid for included for a really low price. If Ultimate drags in a bunch of new players, hopefully Epic will have worked out how to let us all play Gears 3 together without a ton of lag, which seems to plague Gears 2 online.
UPDATE: CVG is reporting it has talked with a GameStop rep, who has apparently confirmed that Gears of War Ultimate will be a Gears of War 1 and 2 compilation. Nothing official from Microsoft or Epic, though.
